Sun and Moon Stellar Tourneys TODAY, 6/11!

Hello Debatable Lands! Salve Accolens!

Reminder that we have two of our premier practice tournaments- the Stellar Tournaments – today, Sunday June 11th! At the normal practice site at the Washington Blvd parklet.

The winners are named Defenders of the Sun, Moon, or Sky (Archery), complete with incredible regalia and MUCH GLORY. It’s an opportunity for martial folks, heralds, MOLs, list runners, marshals and MITs and consorts to participate in Tournaments of the same style as the Kingdom “big” tourneys (Crown Tourney, QRC, and Kingdom Archery Champs). Come and see!

Times are a little fluid. The Moon List (Rapier Fighting) will occur not before 1:30 pm, and will be before the Sun List.

The Sun List (Heavy Fighting) will be after the Moon List.

With much gratitude to Hara-shonogon, who volunteered to MOL, even though the event stewarded Iris Festival and Baronial Equestrian Champs yesterday! (Much more on that later – it was amazing!)

PS: Archery practice is happening today, but Thrown Weapons practices is not.

Iris Festival: Final Reminders

The Iris Festival is about to begin!

As we head into the weekend, please remember that this is a public park with little in the way of facilities. The weather is shaping up to be a beautiful day, but remember your sunscreen, bug spray, sunshades, chairs, feast gear, and plenty of water! Be aware that there was poison ivy on the site last year and there may be ticks.

This is also a great time to make sure you have your blue card or a picture of your blue card (those who have them). All attendees will need to sign the waiver for equestrian activities.

See you Saturday!

Ever in Service,

Gwen

Iris Festival: ONE WEEK!

Greetings, Noble Populace!

The 2nd Iris Festival and Debatable Lands EQ Champs is only ONE WEEK away!

We have tentatively added a DEMO by The Honorable Lord Wilhelm Smydele von Soelinge on metalwork brooches. Look in the site booklet for the revised schedule.

A REMINDER that you must reserve a bento box ahead of time if you want to pick up lunch; there will be very limited quantities for those who do not register. Here are some details about that to tempt you:

Bento boxes will be filled with a wide variety of pickled and sauced fresh vegetables, and will include chicken and an egg. For vegans, THL Elss will substitute tofu; for gluten-free diners, everything will have substitutions that eliminate wheat. For any other restrictions or dietary concerns, please contact Her Ladyship directly (elss.of.augsburg@gmail.com). Any non-standard requests must be made before Friday, June 9.
Your box will include napkins, but no silverware as you will get chopsticks when you troll in. Extra soy sauce and wasabi paste will be available.
Beverages will be cold water and hot matcha green tea. Limited servings of hot black tea will also be available. Be sure to bring your drinking vessel. This is a glass-free site.

See you soon!

Iris Festival Classes – June 10

Nobles!

The Iris Festival is in just over two weeks!

We have a terrific lineup of classes for you. Here are the details about them:

Minister of the Lists Training (Baroness Vika Viborgskaya) – We need you! Fighting can not happen without an MOL at an event. Join Her Excellency to learn how you can help grow our numbers, learn how to check fighters in and learn tournament formats. She will also be reviewing the running of tournaments so if you feel a bit rusty come get a polishing. 1hr

Introduction to Taiko (Mistress Stuirrim and The Honorable Lady Elaine Fairchilde) – Beginning Japanese drum technique. Limit: 10 students per session. 30min, 3 sessions

Domestication of a Wild Horse (The Honorable Lady Gesa von Wellenstein) – Her Ladyship Gesa talks through the process of turning a wild horse into a faithful riding companion. 30 min

Mukashi Mukashi (Lord Turlough Feolain) – A small collection of tales from folk traditions of Japan. These are traditional tales, some involving minor gory details and themes of suspense that may not be suitable for more sensitive audidences. 1 hr

Kumihimo on the Marudai (Ishiyama Shonagon) – Learn the basics of Japanese “kumihimo” braiding on the “marudai” round stand. We will go over basics of setup, and several different 8 and 16 strand braids. Younger attendees may need extra assistance. 90 min

Resist-Dyed Furoshiki Make and Take (The Honorable Lady Oribe Tsukime) – Learn how to do the type of stitched resist dyeing called bōshi shibori, and put your new skill to use dyeing a Japanese carrying cloth. If you’re wearing clothes you’re not willing to risk, Her Ladyship will put it in the dye for you. Limit: 15. Materials Cost: $5. 2 hrs

Developing a Japanese Persona (Tatsukawa Gentarou Chisato) – A discussion and aid course on the multitude of persona ideas, available in medieval Japan, for both men and women. 1 hr

Kute-uchi hand-loop braiding basics (Ishiyama Shonagon) – Learn the basics of Japanese hand-help loop-manipulation “kute-uchi” braiding. This period braiding technique uses no equipment. Loops of cord are passed from hand to hand, forming braids. Three basic five-loop braids will be covered. Younger attendees may need extra assistance. 1 hr

Tea and Tanka (The Honorable Lady Oribe Tsukime and Tatsukawa Gentarou Chisato) – An informal hangout: enjoy matcha as we read and write poetry. Materials Cost: $1 for tea (no cost for tanka!). 1 hr

We are so excited for all these topics. See you soon!

New Baronial Thrown Weapons Champion!

Hello Debatable Lands! Salve Accolens!

This past Sunday, we held our annual Thrown Weapons Championship.

Many thanks to our outgoing Champ and TW Marshal, THL Meinolfr. He created a varied and interesting throw, designed to showcase skill in ax, knife and spear. We witnessed all 6 entrants have a great time, and they included both a new thrower and a youth thrower, and new Debatable Landers from legacy Griffins Keep, and Greater Æthelmearc. It was so much fun!

It was a very close tourney, but the winner your new Thrown Weapons Champ: Lord Rhys Dunlop! Lord Rónán Ó Conaill will be standing as second.

VIVANT!!!

Troll Help Needed for Iris Festival – June 10, 2023

Hello neighbors!
The June Iris Festival is coming up, and I need people to help run the troll table. We need two people at the table the whole time; please send me your availability and how long you’re willing to help out (forveleth@gmail.com).

No experience is necessary; everything you need to do will be explained when you get there. The troll table at the Iris Festival site has an excellent view of the horse arena, so it’s a great way to contribute to the event and watch the equestrian games at the same time. Finally, please forward this announcement to any other people or lists that might be interested!

Thank you, and looking forward to seeing you there!
Best,
Laird Forveleth Dunde
