Sad Tidings: Lord Ardghal O’Breaslain

Our hearts are heavy this day, as we have just been informed of the death in a motorcycle accident of one of our ex-patriots, Lord Ardghal O’Breaslain, mundanely known as Zac Gallo.

Ardghal started in the SCA here in the Debatable Lands in the College of Cour d’Or several years ago, joining our Rapier ranks. He had moved to Shreveport, Louisiana, with his Lady, and was active in the Shire there as one of the founding members, and was their Rapier Marshal. He still visited his teachers and friends here, when he came to visit the Debatable Lands, and held us in his heart.

He will be sorely missed, a life cut short. Our hearts go out to his lady, Katharine, his family, friends, and the Shire of Ardanroe in the Kingdom of Gleann Abhann. May they find peace in their hearts.

Inquires as to final arrangements may be sent to our Seneschal, THL Muirgheal (seneschale@debatablelands.org)

In Gravitate et Caritate,

Castle Fire – Family Safe

As many of you know, the Castle in Wexford had a significant fire today. This message is to let you know that Eorl Byron, Countess Ariella, and the family is safe.

Our Barony stands in support of our beloved members, and more information will come if they need assistance.

From Their Majesties

Unto home bound Aethelmerac do Timothy and Gabrielle send greetings,

Things in the world around us are filled with chaos and uncertainty. We have all seen the horror stories of people hoarding things and price gouging things, not caring for their fellow man. However, here in the SCA, we see, hear and read story after story of people looking after the people in their community, whether scadian or mundane. It is very reassuring to be shown time and time again the quality of people who make up the circle of friends we call Aethelmearc and indeed the Society.

While there is a small part of us that is sad that the remaining royal progress events we had scheduled have all been canceled or postponed, We would much rather do what is in the best interests of all our members, and indeed the mundane world around us. We have had a phenomenal time serving this kingdom, and know that these decisions are for the best.

Since so many of you have asked, as of now, the plans for Coronation are still fluid. As of now, Coronation still is planned for April 4th, but it will be very limited, but plans may change, so that the event and ceremony can be a grand celebration worthy of them. They have both always served our Kingdom in with every ounce of energy once could ask for, and we hope their special day can be glorious and memorable.

Most of the items on our court dockets will be absorbed by TRHs, but there are a few that they have graciously allowed us to do as regency courts in their name once things return to normal.

Keep doing those things that make Aethelmearc a model of kindness and generosity that we only wish the world around us would follow. We have been honored and privileged to count ourselves amongst your numbers for many years, and will continue to do so until we no longer walk the earthy,

Timothy and Gabrielle

Food Guild News

Salve! Greetings, Food Friends!

The next meeting of the Food Guild will be on
Saturday, February 29, about 1 pm to 5 pm
at the house of the Baron and Baroness.

We will be having fun with Roman cooking! On the agenda to make will be Mulsum, Boiled Eggs with Pine Nut Sauce, Libum, and Dulcia Domestica.
There will be substitutions due to nut
allergies. Please contact me at Elss.of.Augsburg @ gmail.com
if you have questions about ingredients.

There is limited information on roman cooking, so you will need to start researching by looking at De Re Coquinaria by
Apicius. Of course, it was written in Latin originally, but there are original text and translated text all over the place. For those who don’t have a copy, here is a translation in English : http://penelope.uchicago.edu/Thayer/E/Roman/Texts/Apicius/home.html

There are many translations of Apicius, but not a lot of adaptions of the recipes themselves. Here’s one that has redacted a few of the recipes:

Sorry about the size of this thing, but the blog doesn’t forward links to the email list, so I have to put the whole site name in.

By the way, I peruse medieval cookbooks from all over the world online from here: http://medievalcookery.com/etexts.html.

Please contact me at Elss.of.Augsburg @ gmail.com or as Elss Augsburg on Facebook if you need the Baron/ess’s address or want to bring a contribution to the day.

Calling all Cooks, Event Stewards, and Activity Coordinators!

Sad news

A member 0f our populace has requested that the following be shared:

Members who have been part of the group for more than 10 years may remember my mother in law, Lyn Parkinson, who was known to you as Lady Allison DuTours.

EDIT: A picture of Lady Allison can be found here.

Lyn passed away last Sunday and we would like to share her obituary.  It can be viewed here in picture form, or at the website of the listed funeral home.

Lyn loved SCA and her time with it.  She eventually became unable to participate but it brought her great joy.

It is possible that we may have books or items that may be SCA appropriate. If you believe that there may be any possible interest in those things please let me know.

Sincerely,
Lori Parkinson

Sad Tidings

My Dear Friends,

We are deeply saddened to inform you that Lady Amanda of Kirkby Lonsdale  (Suzanne Veter) has passed away.

She was second generation SCA, and Principle of the Order of the Tyger’s Cub in the East Kingdom. She grew up in the Rhydderich Hael, traveled extensively, and has lived here in the Debatable Lands for the past 7 or so years. Amanda was a sweet lady, and the loss of her light is felt strongly.

We offer our condolences to her husband, Viscount Ariel, her children, her parents, Sir Raymond of the Straits and Viscountess Angharad of Lions Tower, and her friends.

We will pass along any other information about final arrangements if they become available.

In Caritate,
Baroness Hilda and Baron Brandubh
