BMDL Brewers Guild – Up and running again!

Greetings all!
For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Alysoun, and I live here in the Debatable Lands.  I spend most of my SCA time singing in the Debatable Choir, but I also do calligraphy, illumination, garb-making, and BREWING.
Here is some exciting news for those of you who like to brew (and drink): the BMDL Brewers Guild is getting up and running again!  I have been selected as the new Guildmistress, and my deputy is Lord Ronan O’Conall.  Please feel free to reach out to either of us with questions or comments.
We have a request for you that will help us get organized: if you have participated in the past, would like to participate now, or just want to stay informed with what we are doing, please take the short poll below.  It will take you less than five minutes and will help us with planning our upcoming meetings and events.
Thank you in advance for your time and attention.
Cheers!
Alysoun

Baron Leonard the Younger

Greetings Debatable Lands,
As the Ice Dragon passes over our neighbors to the north, We come to you with sad tidings. Baron Leonard the Younger, modernly Leonard Loyd, passed away this week at his home. His family from out of town is making the funeral arrangements, and as soon as information is available We will post.

Baron Leonard the Younger was the Second Baron of the Barony-Marche of the Debatable Lands, serving our society in that office from 1979 to 1992, and a Master of the Laurel for Viking Studies. He was a world traveler and a story teller, and we are saddened by his loss. We as a Barony are less without him as a crucial part of our history. May the long ships speed him to Valhalla.

Please toast to his memory, and share a story of the old days. Len would have liked that.

Cheers to the Remembrance of Leonard,
Brandubh et Hilderun

Newsletter Quiz!

From Gwendolyn the Graceful, Brehyres, Greetings!

In this digital age, it is relatively easy to find out about upcoming events, deadlines, and other important activities, without reading our newsletters. But sometimes, information in the publications is not easily found elsewhere. And even if it is, the newsletter is a handy way to quickly catch up on the important notices and happenings in our lands.

For example, did you know that recently, His Grace, Duke Christopher, posted information  about the Board soliciting feedback on new policies regarding hate speech? Did you know that AEthelmearc was well-represented in the Blackfox Award nominations? You would if you’d read the newsletter!

To encourage us all (me included!) to remember to check out our Kingdom and Baronial newsletters, I am going to try to post shortly after their publication dates with fun challenges. They may be treasure hunts, quizzes, or other kinds of reports. Some will be interactive and some may be notices of tidbits that might be of interest. Both the AEstel and the Althing will be included as they come out.

These games are for glory, amusement, and absolutely no prizes whatsoever! There are no losers! The fun is in finding the answers for yourselves.

So, here is the first installment: a trivia quiz on the most recent AEstel (May 2018):

  1. What is depicted in the cover photo? (Bonus: which gentle took the photo?)
  2. There is an officer accepting letters of interest for a deputy position, which are due on May 1. Which Great Officer is it, what is the position being sought, and who is the person holding that post now?
  3. When will the Kingdom Youth Championship tourney be held?
  4. How many event announcements are posted in the May AEstel? (Bonus: How many of them are *not* Royal Progress events?)
  5. How many events are listed on the At-a-Glance page?

My hope is that these questions pique curiosity and foster discussion, particularly of events we might not be aware of because they are not RP’s or they are out of region, or both!

Most importantly, I hope these little teasers inspire y’all to check out the newsletters and keep current!

We’ll do this again soon!

Youth Combat

Sunday, April 15th- the location of practice will follow the adult heavy fighting. Please watch for their post to the location. We will only be practicing from 2 to 4pm due to a death in my family.

Sunday, April 22nd- We will be at the castle. I will post exact times soon.

Sunday, April 29th- We will not be having practice.

A and S — Sew Easy Garb — April 12

It's the Art-Signal! Quick, to the Science-Mobile!
Arts & Sciences Meeting

Thursday, April 12th is once again A&S time!

Whether you are going to the Coronation of Sven and Siobhan or not, you might want to make some Finnish garb. This Thursday, Ihala Auvinen will help us create an underdress and an overdress. You’ll find documentation here: https://ravencrosspress.wordpress.com/2015/04/14/eura-underdress-the-family-look-pt-1/ .

To make an underdress, bring 2 yards of 60″ wide fabric (linen, faux-linen, wool, cotton). This is a zero waste pattern with no gussets or gores! WASH and DRY your fabric to pre-shrink it.

To make an overdress, bring enough fabric to wrap around your body comfortably. Also, bring a woven belt and brooches or pins for the shoulders.

I will have my sewing machine, box of threads, and scissors. Bring anything else you think you’ll need, such as paper and pencil to take notes or make diagrams.

Silva Vulcani Muster This Week

Greetings,

There will be no fencing practice this week because of the Silva Vulcani muster at California University of Pennsylvania.

It starts at 11 Am and ends at 6PM, I encourage everyone who is planning to fence with the rapier army at Pennsic this year to come out and join us as we hone our melee skills.

We will be at Hamer Hall, which is the gym that was used for QRC.

Practice will resume next week at our normal time. We expect to move outdoors next week, so we will be at the Washington Blvd site not the Chinese Church.
