From Their Majesties

Unto home bound Aethelmerac do Timothy and Gabrielle send greetings,

Things in the world around us are filled with chaos and uncertainty. We have all seen the horror stories of people hoarding things and price gouging things, not caring for their fellow man. However, here in the SCA, we see, hear and read story after story of people looking after the people in their community, whether scadian or mundane. It is very reassuring to be shown time and time again the quality of people who make up the circle of friends we call Aethelmearc and indeed the Society.

While there is a small part of us that is sad that the remaining royal progress events we had scheduled have all been canceled or postponed, We would much rather do what is in the best interests of all our members, and indeed the mundane world around us. We have had a phenomenal time serving this kingdom, and know that these decisions are for the best.

Since so many of you have asked, as of now, the plans for Coronation are still fluid. As of now, Coronation still is planned for April 4th, but it will be very limited, but plans may change, so that the event and ceremony can be a grand celebration worthy of them. They have both always served our Kingdom in with every ounce of energy once could ask for, and we hope their special day can be glorious and memorable.

Most of the items on our court dockets will be absorbed by TRHs, but there are a few that they have graciously allowed us to do as regency courts in their name once things return to normal.

Keep doing those things that make Aethelmearc a model of kindness and generosity that we only wish the world around us would follow. We have been honored and privileged to count ourselves amongst your numbers for many years, and will continue to do so until we no longer walk the earthy,

Timothy and Gabrielle

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19)

Greetings unto the Noble Populace,

I am certain that with the cancellation of several large events you are starting to question what the Debatable Lands should do for smaller gatherings, guilds, ect. I have been in contact with Master Illadore, the Kingdom Seneschal and I have been advised that the Board of Directors of the SCA is meeting and will have direction for us shortly.

In the meantime, Please follow the guidelines given to you by your local healthcare professionals in regard to Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and how best not to contract it. Please remember that a little disappointment now could help keep your fellow Debatable-Landers healthy and safe.

When I have more news, I will share it with you.

Please feel free to contact me via email or with the number provided in the Dark Pages. I work many hours but I will return your calls and emails as soon as possible.

Thank you for your understanding and for your compassion to each other in this unusual time.

Fencing Practice at Chinese Church this Sunday 3/8

Due to a scheduling conflict fencing practice will not be at Broken Plow this week, so we will be at our regular location, the Chinese Church.

Practice will run from 2 – 6 as usual. Loaner gear for fencing and cut n thrust is available.

Next Sunday 3/15 Lord Alessandro will be running practice while I am away at Gulf Wars.

I do not have a marshal for the week of 3/22 yet, so if you can run practice that week please let me know.

Sewing Thurs Mar 5th

Reminder: The next sewing circle will be Thursday, March 5th starting at 7:30. The address is 1105 Shady Avenue, 15232. The focus is planning with an emphasis on Japanese clothing. I will survey Japense men’s and women’s garments, make fabric suggestions, and go over what is practical especially at outdoor camping events. I also have collected Viking dress patterns and instructions. If you prefer to just come sew or iron you are welcome as well. There are sergers, sewing machines, ironing boards, and one embroidery machine. If you want to plan some other garment or have general questions, you can email sewing at debatablelands.org or send email to Hara Kikumatsu. My email is in the dark pages. There are two resident cats so medicate appropriately.

Cooking Grand Tournament

Last month, I cooked my first period lunch for Aethelmearc Grand Tournament. I had three goals while preparing this menu:

  1. Don’t go over budget
  2. Nobody goes home hungry and everything tastes good
  3. Stay as close to period as possible

There were many steps I took to meet my goals, but I wanted to share the research that I did for the menu, especially after having several requests for various recipes. If anyone has any questions please feel free to reach out; I will be happy to tell you more about the steps I took or what I would do differently with each recipe next time. I look forward to making lunch at the upcoming Day of Story and Song at the castle as well; if this menu sounds good, then please join us next week!
