Calling all archers! MITs wanted!

Greetings archers of the Debatable Lands!

I am officially putting out a call for marshals-in-training for target archery in our Barony! Some of you have already reached out to me and some of you have already begun training, but I would like to get a definitive headcount of all who are interested in becoming marshals. The duties of an archery marshal include:

  • Inspecting participants’ equipment
  • Assisting in the setup and teardown of the range
  • Assisting the marshal-in-charge with calling the line
  • Ensuring all rules and safety standards are upheld
  • Submitting a quarterly report to the Kingdom Archery Marshal

The Marshal’s Handbook can be found on the Kingdom Earl Marshal page at marshal.aethelmearc.org. In the headings at the top of the page, the society wide handbook is under Society Rules and the Kingdom handbook is under Policies. All marshals and MITs must know both rulesets.

If you would like to be an archery marshal then please send me a message either via facebook, or via email at archerymarshal at debatablelands dot org.

*Note: You must be a member of the SCA with an active membership in order to be a marshal.

Thank you all for your interest in volunteering! See you on the range!

In service,
Ronan O Conaill
Captain of Archers, Debatable Lands

Further Thanks for Iris Festival from the Baron & Baroness

Hello Debatable Lands! Salve Accolens!

In addition to the thanks and congratulations so eloquently said by THL Hara, the event steward, we’d like to offer the following thanks:

To THL Hara and her talented staff, for conceiving, planning, and flawlessly executing a perfect day. A true celebration of Japanese culture, Equestrian prowess and pagentry, and an amazing showcase of the Barony’s and her neighbors’ talents on the martial field, in the arts, and in service.

To Their Majesties and Their Highnesses for attending, participating, and honoring Their people of the Debatable Lands and neighbors.

To our Head Retainer of the Day, Master Emrys Eustace, hight Broom, his first time doing the job and executing it perfectly.

To our retainers of the day, whom we kept running (sometimes literally!) all day, most of whom did double duty helping set up, tear down, chase information for Court, guard, take pictures, and provide good company: Elinore (Elle), Rei of the Debatable Lands, Lady Scheiny, Lady Finé, Lord Patrokles, THL Elsa, and Master William.

Also to our children, Otto and Carl, who while not official retainers, did quite a lot of setting up, tearing down, and random errands.

To those that made Baronial Court possible: Our hard-working and very much appreciated Baronial Signet, THL Rachel, as well as all the scribes, wordsmiths and token makers (check out the Court Report for a list!). Special thanks to Lady Forveleth for joyfully creating a very weird special request for an edible comet, suitable for a horse! To our brand-new Comet Pursuivant, Lady Jehannette, who did an exemplary job on their first time as primary Court Herald! To Don Jorundr for his assistance. To THL Vika for tallying the Iron Comet Challenge results. To THL Muirgheal for her excellent communication as TRMs Reign Coordinator and Breheyres Gwendolyn as Jewel Herald and her Coordination. And of course Lord Niall our Etherial Herald for streaming Court to those at home, and for loaning us their banners.

Also to those that gave of their skills for the populace. THL Silence for her records of the day. Her pictures are truly lovely. Lady Scheiny and Lady Forveleth for donating largesse for Thescorre investiture.

To those Equestrians that attended, particularly THL Gesa. We know what it takes to attend, and we very much appreciate it.

To our newcomers: welcome, it was lovely speaking with you! And to the babies and children and their parents: your presence was a true joy!

To those that were bold enough to enter the Iron Comet Challenge… you made our day! The display of prowess, chivalry, and determination was amazing to behold!

Count Andreas, who proved victorious. Mistress Fredeburg (2nd place), Lord skjoldr (3rd place). Lord Ulf and Lord Patrokles, both of whom entered all 5 events. Master Donnan, our very first Iron Comet Champion, returning again. And Mistress Irene, Mistress Gabby, and Baroness Racheldis. To our Youth Competititors Otto and Sigdis… well done!

Thank you all!

The night is long and our memories grow distant. Please do reach out if we have unintentionally omitted anyone.

In Levitate et Caritate, and Cheers,

Baron Brandubh and Baroness Hilda

Iron Comet, Iris Festival, and Equestrian Champs

We had a perfect day for Iron Comet Challenge, Japanese Iris Festival, and the Kingdom Equestrian Champs. There was so much to enjoy. There were four martial tournaments and all were well fought. There were two arts and science competitions: an equestrian tournament and a non-equestrian tournament. Both tournaments had a number of entries and there was so much we could learn just from the tournaments. In addition to the tournaments, there was an Asian themed Arts and Sciences display with plenty to see (and taste). There was also all-day origami by Maire. And we had horses. There was the agility challenge, the A&S entries, and the riding for the Prince in the competition for King’s choice and queens. To finish the day we had a joust followed by court for Baron and Baroness and the King and Queen.

There are so many thank yous: Thanks to Baron Brandubh and Baroness Hildarun for their support of the little Japanese event that grew to Iron Comet. Also thanks to Gesa for asking to include horses. Thank you also to Their Majesties Byron and Ariella for expanding that little barony event to Kingdom Equestrian Champs. Thanks to my mentor Elss, and my other advisors Muirgheal, Arianna, and Hilda. Thank you as well to reservations by Alaric and troll by Forveleth, and Astridr. The site tokens design was found by Elss, and the tokens were made by Elss and Forveleth. Thank you also to covid checkers Graidhne, Elsa, Gwen. Thank you to Gesa for equestrian covid checkins and equestrian liason work. Thanks to the hard-working setup folks Robert, Alaric, Sean aka Jay, Maire, Elss, Ishiyama, and Gesa. Also thanks to Ishiyama for coordinating all the arts and For all the marshal efforts thanks to our marshals Ronan, Meinulf, Robert, Dorothea, and Gozen and also thanks to the MoLs Vika and Itome. Special thanks to Jussey for all the carrying. Thank you also for royalty hospitality by Saiaiko, Illadore, Sturrim, with help from Vaunda. The heralds gave us all the news of the days winners Gwendolyn the Graceful and new barony herald Jehannette. Also thanks to Niall for court streaming. Thanks to all the scribes who worked on all the lovely scrolls. Also at the end of a very full day, thank you to the clean-up crew of Arianna, Robert, Muirgheal, Jorundr, Alaric, Rachel, Elss, and Ishiyama who made the work go very quickly. Thank you as well to the equestrians for their cleanup.

Congratulations to competition winners:
heavy – Master Jussi Laplein
fencing – Don Cyrus Augur
thrown weapons – Lord Godzimir the Golden
archery – Lord Skjoldr Bjorn
a&s – Mistress Irene von Schmetterling
youth archery & youth a&s – Otto Brandulfarson & Sigrid von Fredeburg
youth thrown weapons – Otto Brandulfarson
overall iron comet – Count Andreas Morgan
youth iron comet – Otto Brandulfarson
completion of all five areas – Lord Patrokles Athenaios & Lord Ulf of the Wee Horn

Congratulations to Mistress Rhiannon Elandris and Mistress Tiercelin riding Romeo and Mercutio who won King’s choice in the equestrian champs. Also congratulations to Lord Yardley of the Debatable Lands riding Diamond who won Queen’s choice.

Also cheers to Lady Gesa von Wellenstein on Maple and Lord Yardley on Diamond for our joust. One final equestrian note we had a brand new rider Lars on Maple in the champs competition.

Inspirations: The conversation with Oribe Tsukime was the spark of the idea. Elss encouraged, mentored, and contributed the origami pattern. It was fun that Alaric, Elss, and Ceindrech wanted to make their own garb even though they had no Japanese garb background. I provided guidance and advice as needed. Then as the event came closer, Aibell was working on new Japanese outfit and asked advice. Then she did all the research on the beetle shells. On the day of the event the weather was so lovely. I saw so many people who had made or borrowed Japanese clothing. I was thrilled to hear that poetry by Morien was inspired by the Japanese event. I was also quite impressed by Count Andreas explanation about why he tried his arts and sciences project. Also special thanks to my constant support Ishiyama.

In Service and Gratitude,

Hara Kikumatsu

Baronial Court Report, Iris Festival 4 June A.S. 57

Herein lies the report of the court of Their Excellencies, Brandubh et Hilderun, Baron and Baroness of the Barony-Marche of the Debatable Lands, presided over by Their Majesties, Byron & Ariella, King and Queen of Æthelmearc, and attended by Their Highnesses, Arnthor and Ceirech, at the Iris Festival on June 4th, Anno Societatis 57. Lady Jehannette Bouchart, Comet Pursuivant, reporting, seconded by Drotinn jørundr hinn rotinn.

Afternoon Court at the Equestrian Stables:

Their Excellencies opened their court and thanked the equestrian participants for traveling so far and competing in the challenges that day, as well as contributing to the pageantry of the Barony and Kingdom.

Their Excellencies processed to Maple the Warhorse in her paddock and spoke to The Honorable Lady Gesa von Wellenstein of Their appreciation of Maple. Maple has served as the steed for newcomers at Baronial equestrian practice, all of the Baronial Equestrian Champions, Their Excellencies, and Their Majesties alike. Her calm and gentle temperament is most favored by the Baroness. Because of all this, Maple was awarded an Iron Comet. The scroll was by Lady Forveleth Dunde, as was the edible Comet token.

Court was then suspended.

Evening Court:

Their Excellencies reopened Their court and greeted the populace and thanked them for coming to the day of pageantry and tournaments.

Their Excellencies then invited the event steward, The Honorable Lady Hara Kikumatsu into their court. She then thanked her staff for the day. Their Excellencies went on to announce the winners of the individual tournaments, and The Honorable Lady Hara presented each with a favor created by her own hand: in the heavy list bearpit, Master Jussi Laplein; in the fencing bearpit, Don Cyrus Augur; on the thrown weapons range, Lord Godzimir the Golden; on the archery range, Lord Skjoldr Bjorn; in the arts and sciences competition, Mistress Irene von Schmetterling; on the youth archery range, it was a tie between Otto Brandulfarson & Sigrid von Fredeburg, as it also was in the youth arts & sciences competition; on the youth thrown weapons range, the victor was Otto Brandulfarson.

Their Excellencies then invited the victor of the overall Iron Comet competition, Count Andreas Morgan, into Their court, to receive a scroll and a favor for his victory. They then called in the victor of the youth Iron Comet competition, Otto Brandulfarson, so he as well could receive his scroll and favor for his victory. The illumination for both scrolls was done by Baron Alaric MacConnal, and the calligraphy was done by The Honorable Lady Rachel Dalicieux.

Their Excellencies then wished to recognize the two competitors who had competed in all five tournaments that day, and thus called in Lord Patrokles Athenaios and Lord Ulf of the Wee Horn to receive favors in recognition of their efforts put forth that day.

It was then requested by Their Excellencies that Lemony of the Debatable Lands be called forth to be recognized for her participation in both fencing and archery, as well as her ability in striking coins for the Moneyers Guild, and thus They awarded her with a Purple Comet. The scroll was written by Lady Sorcha McKenzie, and painted by Katrina Beese.

Rei of the Debatable Lands was then summoned by the Baron and Baroness, to be recognized for their abilities in the fencing list and on the archery range, and thus they were awarded with a Purple Comet. The scroll was created by their father, Lord Reinhard Regenbogen.

It was then demanded that the illuminator of Lemony’s document was to present herself in court, and thus Katrina Beese was summoned to the throne of Their Excellencies. For her artistry, as well as her skills in fencing and archery, she, too, was awarded a Purple Comet. The illumination for the scroll was done by Lady Dorothea Stark Schütz, and the calligraphy and words were by The Honorable Lady Rachel Dalicieux.

Lady Finé Failain was then invited into Their Excellencies’ court to be recognized for her participation in the Debatable Choir, as well as her abilities in clothing herself and others, and thus she was awarded a Silver Comet. The scroll was done by The Honorable Lady Gesa von Wellenstein, and the wordsmithing was by Baron Alaric MacConnal.

Dame Elsbeth Anne Roth and Baron Alaric MacConnal were then called into court as a set, though to be recognized for different things. Dame Elsbeth was to be recognized for her teaching of new heralds and work for the Known World Online Heraldic Consultation Table. Baron Alaric was to be recognized for hosting ethereal period Shakespeare movie nights, as well as his work on the art and administration of the Known World Online Heraldic Consultation Table. For both their many acts of service, they were each awarded a Gold Comet. Their matching scrolls were by The Honorable Lady Rachel Dalicieux, with wordsmithing done by Mistress Arianna of Wynthrope. The Gold Comet pouches given to Dame Elsbeth and Baron Alaric were made by Mistress Irene von Schmetterling.

Their Excellencies then saw fit to call into court the scribes, wordsmiths, and creators of regalia to show their gratitude to them for all the art and pageantry they contribute to the court of the Barony, and thus They gave all of them tokens of appreciation.

It was at this point that the court of Their Excellencies Brandubh et Hilderun was then closed.
