Archery Returns to Highland Park!

Archers of the Debatable Lands, ready your bows and arrows! Spring has sprung and archery practice is on once again!

This Sunday, April 16th from 11am to 2pm, our regularly scheduled archery practice returns to the usual practice site at the Highland Park Northeast Parking Area. For location information, see the Google Maps link here: https://goo.gl/maps/xgCP69bPX2KRK2Qq5.

We have loaner gear available for anyone who’d like to give archery a try but doesn’t have equipment of their own. Just reach out to me via email at archerymarshal (at) debatablelands.org, or send me a message on Facebook or Discord, and I’ll make sure to bring an extra set for you.
*Loaner gear is first come first serve.

Look for more announcements here on the blog for updates on the practice schedule, upcoming archery events, and the dates for our monthly archery portion of the Stellar Tournaments – the Sky List!

See you all in the park!

Sunday sewing – Scroll case extravaganza this Sunday, April 16 – other projects going forward

Now that outdoor practice is starting again, I will be holding in-person sewing from 2-5pm Sunday afternoons. Location is my home, 1105 Shady Ave, Pittsburgh, PA, 15232. Please do not park in the driveway. Times may vary depending on weather or my schedule. If the weather is poor, I may start sewing earlier. Watch Stórfréttir for changes to the regular schedule. I’d like to start this Sunday with a scroll case extravaganza. I have fabric, I have cardboard, I have a power cutter for the cardboard and sewing scissors for the fabric. I have sewing machines and tables, thread, pins, rulers, and markers. The barony needs more scroll cases. Let’s make some scroll cases to start the season. You may bring your own fabric and cardboard and other equipment, but you can’t leave unused supplies here. I’m full of fabric and cardboard.

Going forward feel free to bring any sewing project. If you are interested in making Japanese garments for Iris festival or just because it looks comfortable, this is your chance. If you want fabric recommendations, here you go: linen is really comfortable, ramie is also comfortable and more period, and lightweight hemp is great if you can find it. Look for Robert Kaufman humboldt hemp or just lightweight 100% hemp. There are asian cotton prints, but cotton is somewhat post period. But don’t let that discourage you if you find the perfect pattern. How much you need depends on the fabric width, what you are making, and your size. Check with me for an estimate if you have a fabric in mind and know the width. I usually find nice linen and hemp on etsy.com. I’ve seen lovely ramie fabric on aliexpress.com.

Call For Letters: Exchequer

Call For Letters: Exchequer
Posted by: Exchequer

Greetings, Debatable Lands, from your Exchequer. My term comes to an end this July, and I’m expecting my first child in September, so I’m looking for a successor in the position. If you are interested in being the next Debatable Lands Exchequer, please send a letter of intent to myself and the office of the Seneschal by May 31st, 2023. The job is a few hours of work a month and requires only access to Google Sheets.

Being the exchequer is a very fulfilling job, and I’ve greatly enjoyed getting to see the inner workings of how the Barony handles money. I didn’t know anything about accounting when I started and I’ve learned a lot thanks to the amazing guidance of past exchequers. I hope to be available to provide the same help and advice to my successor. If you’re interested in helping out, please email forveleth@gmail.com and seneschal@debatablelands.org.

Æthelmearc A&S Faire

The Æthelmearc Arts & Sciences Faire 2023 is in a few weeks, and it’s not that far away in the Shire of Nithgaard. This is always a wonderful event, and a good way to display your work and get direct feedback from others. You can even enter virtually if you are still nervous about attending in-person events.

The Queen’s Prize Tourney is limited to entrants not already in the Order of the Laurel, but to enter your work you must be sponsored by peer of the Laurel, or by a Fleur d’Aethelmearc (or foreign equivalent).

If you would like to enter the Tourney, but have not yet lined up a sponsor and don’t know who to ask, please let me know and we’ll get you matched up with a sponsor. You have until April 20th to register for virtual participation, and until April 27th to register for in-person.
