A and S — Hand Sewing — Sunday, June 17th

June 17th!
Washington Blvd practice site!
1 PM!

This Sunday, Baroness Hildarun Hugelman will help us understand the fine points of hand sewing. How many stitches do you know? Which stitch is best for hems? or for side seams? or for gussets? Why?

Don’t just use the same stitch for all your projects, instead, understand what each stitch’s best use is. Your clothes will last longer, and you’ll have fewer clothing malfunctions!

Location: Washington Boulevard martial practice site
Address: Allegheny River Blvd and Washington Blvd.
Directions: http://www.debatablelands.org/martial/fight_directions.php
Time: 1 PM.

Standard disclaimers here:

We are now accessible to our less mobile friends, have free parking, and a pet-friendly site. Yay!

However, keep in mind that you should bring everything you need for your comfort including a chair, a beverage or snack, bug spray, sunscreen, hat, cabana boy, musical instruments, sun umbrella, etc., etc., etc. Also, the site has a porta-john and no running water should you wish to make appropriate preparation.

I will have a table and a jug of water so that you can refill your water bottles or mugs.

If you need assistance or have questions, please call or text me at 724-759-3333.

Thank you for asking! These meetings are free and there is no materials charge, as we are generously supported by the Barony and the teachers themselves.

Just a reminder this Sunday, June 17th at 2pm at Washington Blvd is youth combat practice.

Satutday, June 23rd is Iron Comet. Our Baron and Baroness will be picking their baronial youth combat champion in each division. Would love to see everyone there.

No practice June 24th as this is the day after Iron Comet.

Sunday, July 1st is Christmas in July as well as Fox’s birthday. Practice will start at 1230pm at 14 Quail Run, Allison Park 15101 (site is 15 minutes at most from Washington Blvd up Rt 28 and off Rt 910) Every youth is encouraged to come. We will be having a bridge battle, woods battle, bear pit and snowball fight. We will then break to roast hotdogs for our hotdog bar and have cake and ice cream. Then more fun with Christmas theme games and swimming for the rest of the afternoon. If time permits we will also make Smores after swimming.

Looking forward to a great next 3 weeks. Hope everyone will come.

A and S — Bardic Circle — Sunday, June 3rd

Bardic Circle!

June 3rd! Washington Blvd practice site, 1 PM!

Everyone is invited — bards, wanna-be bards, new people, choir members, band members, drummers, I-don’t-know-the-goddamn-words singers, loud singers, cowbell players, yes, you should come too. Can’t sing? Sit next to me, you’ll sound great! Instruments welcome, singers welcome, everybody welcome!

I will be bringing some printouts from here and elsewhere:   http://www.aebards.org/songs/. Alas, I will not be able to set up a campfire for us to sit around, but that means we can be free-form instead of circular!

Sewing Circle Tonight!

From Mistress Ts’vee’a:

Third Wednesdays are Sewing Circle nights at my home in Stanton Heights. That would be tonight. All are welcome to bring current projects, plans for future projects, ideas, questions, or just yourself. Most sewing notions are available.

Time: 7:30-9:30
Address: 5167 Rosecrest Drive 15201

I am happy to help with pattern drafting, but not on Sewing Circle night. We can arrange for a one-on-one time for that. Contact me to coordinate schedules.

See you there!

How Do I Get There From Here?

In the near future, there are two events that will be held at different locations — this weekend’s Barony Meeting will be at fighter practice (See http://www.debatablelands.org/martial/), and the Enhanced Archery Practice on April 22nd will be held at the Castle.

There is a good chance that if you don’t have a car, these will be difficult to get to. However, many fighters, fencers, archers, and other folks will be coming from all around the area to attend these meetings. So why not catch a ride?

If you are on Facebook, then you can subscribe to the BMDL Ride Board at https://www.facebook.com/groups/138059386320162/ and post there to see if anyone near you will be able to give you a ride. Of course, you can always post to the Unofficial Populace Discussion Page (https://www.facebook.com/groups/DebatableLands/) or send an email to Sca-bmdl@lists.andrew.cmu.edu .

Give it a try, we’d love to see you!

SCA Garb Basics

For March 8th’s A+S Meeting, let’s talk about garb

It's the Art-Signal! Quick, to the Science-Mobile!
Arts & Sciences Meeting

One of the things that sets the SCA apart from other organizations is that participants are required to make a reasonable attempt at dressing like medieval nobility when they attend our events. This is meant to encourage participation in the experience, but it can seem daunting when you are first getting started in the SCA.

Let’s have a garb basics round-table this Thursday where we can talk about our experiences getting started with SCA garb, show some examples of basic garb in different styles, and share some tips on how to overcome the basic fear of applying scissors to fabric.

Whether you’re a newcomer who needs to ask a pile of questions, an experienced SCAdian thinking of trying something new, or a garb expert with detailed help to offer, please meet with others in the Baronial Arts and Sciences community tomorrow night in Pittsburgh’s Southside.

We will be at Victory Pointe Gaming Lounge (and ice-cream parlor), upstairs in the game room, at 1113 Carson Street on the South Side, March 8th starting at 7 PM. Come early if you wish, people start arriving about 6:45.

Upstairs is not handicap accessible, so if you need assistance or have questions, please call me at 412-596-2204.

Be sure to park safely — feed the meter if needed. They ticket like crazy on the South Side. I think the best place is across the street in the bank parking lot.

Yours in service,
Ishiyama Gen’tarou Yori’ie
(Arts and Sciences Deputy)

Spring Archery Muster

On April 22nd, an enhanced martial practice will be held at Earl Thomas Byron of Haverford’s castle, the address of which is listed in the Dark Pages.

The primary focus of the day is archery, with a range set up in front of the garage all day and also a shoot from the castle turrets from about 1:00 pm onward. THL Deryk Archer has worked hard to create a set of target challenges for us. The Thrown Weapons and Youth Fighting communities will join us. There will be a space dedicated to A&S, and a few classes will be held.

This practice will be held on Sunday, April 22nd in place of the regularly scheduled practice.
