From the Newcomer Point Coordinator for Pennsic 46, Baroness Desiderata Drake

Badge for the office of Chatelaine

Did you know that there will be an official Newcomers Point at Pennsic this year? It will be across from Troll in the same tent as the Watch (where Lost & Found used to be). We’ll be there to help answer newcomers’ questions about Pennsic and the SCA in general, as well as running a scavenger hunt for newcomers.

But none of this will be possible without the help of volunteers. AEthelmearc is known for being friendly and welcoming to newcomers, so please sign up for a one hour shift to help new people whilst sitting in the shade (and charging your phone).

AEthelmearc is sponsoring Saturday, 8/5 from 10am – 6pm, and so far, Her Highness Juliana, Their Excellencies of the Bog, and Her Excellency of the Rhydderich Hael are the only ones who have signed up for shifts. Since we anticipate it to be a busy day, we hope to have at least 2 people per shift. The following shifts are still available on AEthelmearc Day:
10a-11a (2 people)
11a-12p (1 person)
12p-1p (2 people)
1p-2p (2 people)
4p-5p (1 person)
5p-6p (1 person)

There are also many other shifts available during both peace week and war week. Please send an email to newcomer@pennsicwar.org with your name and phone number to sign up for a shift.

Thank you!

Baroness Desiderata Drake Newcomer Point Coordinator Pennsic 46

Fencing Practice Sunday

Greetings,

This Sunday will be the last fencing practice before Pennsic. If you need an authorization this will also be your last chance to do so before Pennsic unless you go to a different practice.

Practice will be at the usual time and place unless weather causes us to move, so keep a lookout here or on the blog for that call.

We will resume regular practice on Sunday August 19.

Barony Meeting/Practices Tomorrow WILL BE AT THE CASTLE

To alleviate some confusion, I have decided to just move practices and the Barony Meeting to The Castle, 755 Stonegate Dr., Wexford, PA 15090. This is for the Barony Meeting/Garb Swap and Fencing/Heavy/Youth Fight Practices.

The meeting will begin at 1:00 p.m., followed by the garb exchange, and martial practices.

Thank you to Earl Byron and Countess Ariella for their generosity and kindness in opening their home to us once again.

Additional to the Policy Announcement

The SCA “Code of Conduct” is mentioned in the new policy and I have had a few questions about what that is. It’s in the Sanctions Guide, section I.C. –

“C. CODE OF CONDUCT It is expected that participants in the SCA shall treat each other with respect and civility and this extends beyond SCA gatherings. Participants expressing themselves in any forum on an issue related to the SCA shall likewise maintain civility and courtesy. When considering sanctions in response to behavior, the sanctioning authority shall consider the extent of the public comment as well as the gravity of injury done to an individual local branch, Kingdom or the SCA. Behavior that is disruptive to the peace and well-being of the SCA is subject to sanction from an expulsion to Revocation of Membership and Denial of Participation (R&D) especially where there is a continuing course of conduct.”

Scriptorium Cancelled

Unto the Barony, greetings from Kameshima, Scribal Guildmaster.
My apologies for the late notice, but due to a last-minute conflict on the part of the instructor, we must regrettably cancel tomorrow’s Scriptorium. We will re-engage after Pennsic, and we look forward to finding another time for Mistress Graidhne to come and conduct her Scribal Petting Zoo.

New Policy from the Society Seneschal

This is the official Kingdom announcement of this change in Corpora. Please read until the end. There are requirements that involves event Stewards (as well as me).

If you have any questions, please contact Duke Christopher, Æthelmearc Seneschal at his published email address, or through the Æthelmearc website (www.aethelmearc.org).

Odriana, Seneschal

Unto the Glorious Kingdom of Aethelmearc, Greetings from Duke Christopher, Seneschal.

I want to take a moment and make you all aware of a new policy that has been passed down to the Kingdom Seneschals from the Society Seneschal regarding Harassment and Bullying. This policy is now in effect.

The policy may be found here: http://socsen.sca.org/the-sca-harrassment-and-bullying-policy/

Here is the policy as it was passed along to the Kingdom Seneschals from the Society Seneschal:

*The SCA prohibits harassment and bullying of all individuals and groups.* Harassment and bullying includes, but is not limited to the following:
offensive or lewd verbal comments directed to an individual; the display of explicit images (drawn or photographic) depicting an individual in an inappropriate manner; photographing or recording individuals inappropriately to abuse or harass the individual; inappropriate physical contact; unwelcome sexual attention; or retaliation for reporting harassment and/or bullying. Participants violating these rules are subject to appropriate sanctions. If an individual feels subjected to harassment, bullying or retaliation, they should contact a Seneschal, President of the SCA, or the Kingdom’s Board Ombudsman. If a participant of the SCA becomes aware that someone is being harassed or bullied, they have a responsibility pursuant to the SCA Code of Conduct to come forward and report this behavior to a Seneschal, President of the SCA or Kingdom’s Board Ombudsman.

Additionally, you will begin to see this policy posted in the following manner at events and in site handouts. This statement is taken from the Society Seneschal webpage:

The following statement must be posted at gate/troll at every SCA event in a size large enough for people to see it as they enter our events. This language must likewise be quoted in ALL site handouts at every event a site where a handout is made available.

– THE SCA PROHIBITS HARASSMENT AND BULLYING OF ALL INDIVIDUALS AND GROUPS.

– Participants engaging in this behavior are subject to appropriate sanctions.

– If you are subjected to harassment, bullying or retaliation, or if you become aware of anyone being harassed or bullied, contact a Seneschal,
President of the SCA, or your Kingdom’s Board Ombudsman.

Please understand that if you are a local Seneschal or an event autocrat, you must make sure that the above policy is adhered to regarding posting of the required signage and verbiage in the site handout.

There is going to be a period of adjustment here and I would hope that common sense prevails in any complaint that may arise as a result of this new policy.

As always, if you have questions about this policy, please do not hesitate to contact me at the email address listed for me on the Kingdom Webpage.

In Service,

Duke Christopher
Seneschal, Aethelmearc

Publication of Proposed Policy Change

The following policy change has been requested:

A change from:
“II. Officers
A.The Officers of the Barony-Marche of the Debatable Lands are those required by Kingdom Law, the office of the Baron/ess, the Seneschals of the Barony’s nondormant subsidiary groups, and the Webminister. These officers, excluding the office of the Baron/ess, constitute the financial committee of the Barony for the purpose of setting financial policy and approving financial activities. No present or proxied individual may have more than one vote on the financial committee.”

These officers constitute the financial committee of the Barony for the purpose of setting financial policy and approving financial activities. No present or proxied individual may have more than one vote on the financial committee.”

This change would give the Baron/ess a single vote on the Financial Committee. This has historical precedence in our Barony and has been changed back and forth a couple of times.

If you have comments about this proposed policy change that you would like to share, please either comment here or send email to seneschal(at)debatablelands(dot)org.
