Carnegie Science Center Demo

It brings me much sadness and disappointment to have to announce that we will not be participating in the CSC demo 21+ Night this year. There were significant changes to what they needed from us last year as far as insurance and, because it was new to even them, they did not have a real process for this. Their lawyers were not be able to promise that they would have the information required for enhanced insurance in time for us to make that request from Milpitas and have everything in place before the date of the demo. I had a very nice conversation with the Acting Director and he would very much like to have us participate next year and, for their part, they will be working on a process on their side so that things are more organized and timely. The CSC is as disappointed as we are, truly.

I would like to thank Lord Ronan and Lady Zianna for their work with this
over the last couple of years coordinating this event. Their effort and
energy was absolutely appreciated by me and the rest of the Barony.

Going forward, we are going to change some things about how we do larger
demos like this in order to avoid this kind of difficulty and so that we can
deliver the highest-quality experience for us and for the public. We are
also going to be looking at other, more education-centric, opportunities to
really highlight the best aspect of the SCA, participation and sharing our
skills and excitement with each other.

There are some upcoming Demos with CCAC South, the Ellis School, and others to look forward to and I hope that you will be able to make time to volunteer for those. Keep an eye out on the calendar and in the Facebook group for announcements about that.

If you have an idea for a demo, please contact either me or our Chatelaine, Elizabeth Parker (chatelaine (at) debatablelands (dot) org). We would love to do more of these and now that we are aware that more organizations are going to need enhanced insurance from us, we can avoid a situation like this in the future.

No archery Practice

This Sunday there will be no archery practice. Hopefully the weather will warm up just a smidge for next week. Be sure to check out the Barony Meeting at 1pm.

Tomorrow, at the Pittsburgh Chinese Church at 1:00 p.m. will be our March Barony Meeting. If you want to be added to the docket, please contact Maighstir Kieran MacRae (herald at debatablelands.org).

The church is at 8711 Old Perry Hwy, Pittsburgh, PA 15237 and there is parking available behind the church.

Top 10 Reasons to March with the Barony in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Tomorrow (3/16)

  1. You can win the Skirmish of Grant Street in the Great Battle for Pittsburgh!
  2. You don’t actually have to walk… ride on the float and wave to the crowd!
  3. Guys. Guys…. We are between the Jimmy Buffet fan club, the Ghostbusters cosplayers, and the Derby Brats – under 17 Roller Derbyers… doesn’t get much better than that.
  4. Selfies with WWII veterans!
  5. When the drunk folks shout a certain beer slogan at you and our whole float shouts back “DILLY DILLY!!” watch them… Lose.  Their.  Minds.
  6. Blowing kisses to the toddlers, and their sweet little faces staring in awe.
  7. The BALLISTA! Even better, watching the tipsy revelers freak out and duck when you swing it around to point at them!
  8. No one will ever cheer louder for you when you win your battle than a drunk Pittsburgher.
  9. Possible tipsy guest appearance by Svava’s mom!
  10. You don’t want your Baroness to be guarded solely by mercenary scum*… do you…?

BONUS! Free pizza and revelry afterwards at Bella Notte!

Some Details:

  • Meet in the strip district at 20th and Liberty between 9 -9:30am
(There’s actually quite a bit of parking in that area… There’s a bunch at 21st and Smallman, and look around 18th-21st streets, Penn Ave, and the side streets, Liberty will be closed. You’ll need to walk a couple blocks to the float)
  • Wear garb of course, but you can deck yourself out with green and shamrocks, too – we  encourage it!
  • Very family friendly. Every kid that has come with us has enjoyed themselves – and sometimes people throw candy!
  • More details (and some rules) HERE
  • Facebook event is HERE
  • Many thanks to Lord Yingerz, the organizer of this demo, to Lady Kit Fixis, and to Clovenshield for their strong support of this parade activity!

See you there!!!
