Sunday Practices (or not), June 12

Knight Marshal Isenwulf:

There will be heavy practice this Sunday, weather permitting, at the Washington Boulevard site, beginning at 2 PM.  I will be unavailable so Robert will be running the practice.

Captain of Archers Katheryn:

Due to the events of this weekend, there will not be Archery Practice this Sunday. Enjoy your events. And for those Archers going to the Hornwood Inn, I want to see a lot of iron tassels at our next practice.

Thrown Weapons Marshal Kuma:

There will be thrown weapons practice Sunday, and we may have the whole fields to ourselves. There will be 2 challenge targets, Simon says and the hanging man. Come on out and throw.

Deputy Youth Marshal Arianna:

While Mistress Fredeburg is unavailable, I will be running Youth Fighting from 2-5 pm this Sunday at the Washington Blvd. site. Map here: https://goo.gl/maps/K5K28wB4gRU2 There will be loaner gear and freezer pops!

  1. Paid member of the Society.

  4. Capable of taking on a two year commitment to the Barony and the people therein.

Royal Food and Feasting

Lady Zianna writes that she is offering weekly get-togethers at her home to participate in an online course on the history of royal food and feasting that is being offered by the University of Reading.

Good Gentles-

This course was presented in the Aethelmearc Cooks Guild Facebook page. It looks to be very interesting and informative. I have since registered for the class and the pre class discussion has been inviting from people around the world.

If there is an interest – I would be willing to host a weekly gathering – or maybe a recipe exchange – to go over the weekly material and discuss the topics. I have a large screen tv that we can watch it on as well as a pretty large kitchen if we wanted to try a recipe or task from the class.

I can be reached at ladyzianna (at) gmail (dot) com.

Archers Wanted – Scarlet Guard Challenge at Hornwood

archers_446

From Takamatsu Gentarou Yoshitaka —

Archers of the BMDL!

We need to select a representative from our fine Barony to compete in the Scarlet Guard challenge at Hornwood! While normally my competitive ego would demand of me that I do this , I’m ineligible this year! So string your mighty longbow, deadly recurve, speedy horsebow or pinpoint crossbow, I fully expect my comrades in arms to bring a second victory to our Debatable Lands , let’s start a dynasty, shall we?

Here is the original challenge from The Order of the Scarlet Guard:

Greetings

Unto all the groups of AEthelmearc does The Order of the Scarlet Guard wish to issue a challenge. This year on Saturday June 11th in the Shire of Hornwood at the Scarlet Guard Inn IV we are inviting every Barony, Shire, Canton, and College to send an individual to compete in an archery competition.

To enter each group can pick one representative, that is a member of that group, and send along a signed letter from the seneschal of the group as proof of entry. Only persons with a signed letter from the group’s seneschal will be allowed to compete. We would also ask that each group send a small item or token from their group that would then be put in the prize basket for the winner. There is also a banner for the winner to keep during the year. It is our plan to have the name of the winner and group he/she is from added to this banner each year.

Members of the Scarlet Guard are not eligible to shoot in this competition. Also the archer who won the previous year is also not eligible, that group may send another archer instead.

The winner of last year was The Barony-Marche of the Debatable Lands who sent Takamatsu Gentarou Yoshitaka as their representative.

It is our hope to continue this challenge every year.

A further reminder that next weekend, in addition to regular fencing practice on Sunday, there will be a demo at Pitt in Oakland from 12-4 which will be a further chance to fence.

From the Seneschal

BMDL_Seneschal_Official

Greetings to the Debatable Lands from Odriana vander Brugghe!

Recently I was confirmed as the new Seneschal of our amazing Barony. Thank you to our hard-working outgoing Seneschal, Master Alaric MacConnal for his years of service. I would also like to thank my incoming Deputy Seneschals, THL Isabel Fleuritan and Lord Pavel Dudoladev, for stepping up to take on that role.

As the new Seneschal, I want to say hello and invite each of you to seek me out either virtually (email is typically the best way to find me, jenn.strobel@gmail.com), by voice (my number is 412.213.8116), or in person and tell me your ideas and thoughts about our Barony. What would you like to see? How are we doing as a Barony? What could we be doing better? I promise that I will listen to you and do what I can to make your ideas happen and address your concerns to the best of my ability. I look forward to hearing from you.

The job of Seneschal is to make sure that the corporate end of the SCA runs efficiently. But, my personal goal is to make sure that everyone has what they need to make their hobby fun. This shared hobby that we have is, at its core, about having fun together and sharing our unique talents with each other. I love the Debatable Lands and want us to continue to be as amazing and enthusiastic as I know we are and to continue be such a vibrant part of our Kingdom.

To introduce myself to those who have not yet gotten to know me: Currently, I am the Clerk of the Fleur d’Æthelmearc. Previously I have served the Barony as its Signet, the Kingdom as Chancellor of the Æcademy, and have had the pleasure of serving the Barony in several other offices and positions over the years. I’m also an active scribe and cook and am presently an MOL in training. I’ve been active (at various levels) in the Barony since 1988.

I love this Barony deeply and am honored to serve each and every one of you.

Odriana, Seneschal
