Call for Letters — Minister of Arts and Sciences

Greetings to the Barony from your Minister of Arts and Sciences!

It has been my privilege and great pleasure to serve the Barony-Marche of the Debatable Lands as the Minister of Arts and Sciences for two years. My term is coming to an end and so I call for letters from anyone who wishes to run for the office. I will not be seeking a second term, as I would like to work on activating the Food Guild.

My activities for the last two years have been:
** Collecting information on A&S-related activities in the Barony and reporting it to the Kingdom.
** Encouraging others to explore the arts and sciences by holding regular meetings with interesting guests who demonstrate their expertise in many and varied activities.
** Participating in activities such as demos and classes to support the wider A&S community.

Should you have questions about the duties associated with this position, please email me at ansminister@debatablelands.org.

Any gentle who would be considered for this two-year position is invited to send an email with a list of qualifications to me at ansminister@debatablelands.org and to the Seneshale, Meestres Odriana vander Brugghe, at seneschal@debatablelands.org.

In service to the Barony-Marche,
THL Elss of Augsburg
BMDL Minister of Arts and Sciences

Call for Letters: Webminister

My term as your Webminister expires next month, and while I am willing to continue doing this job, I am also willing to give somebody else a chance. I can even serve as deputy to the new Webminister until they get their feet under them, if necessary. Heh, “web feet”.

The Webminister is responsible for the official Baronial web site and its related functions. The Webminister updates the information on the web site as requested, such as when office holders change or a new event is announced. Knowledge of HTML and basic web design is required. Some functions of the web site are written in PHP, and an understanding of PHP would be helpful. You must have a reliable computer, Internet connection, and email address. Your ZX81, 300 baud modem, and AOL address are probably not sufficient. Most changes to the current site can be made in a text editor and uploaded via FTP, so no special software is required. The web site is hosted by a commercial service provider, so the ability to pay hosting and domain registration fees via credit card is required, though you will be reimbursed by the Barony after you make payment.

The Webminister is also responsible for maintaining the list of email aliases. The hosting service also provides email forwarding so that senders can always send email to a Baronial officer without having to remember who currently holds that office and what that person’s address is. Updating the list of aliases involves logging into the hosting provider’s domain management web interface, so some ability to deal with that kind of thing is required. We always have problems with forwarded email landing in spam folders, so dealing with email problems is a constant task.

The Webminister is also responsible for maintaining and administrating the Baronial Blog. The Debatable Blog uses the WordPress system and all interactions with the site are through a web interface. Some knowledge of WordPress usage and administration would be helpful. If I stay as Webminister, I’m going to pester officers a lot more to post things to the blog.

The job of Webminister is not constant. It mostly consists of small amounts of work on a irregular basis, but occasionally requires a large amount of work in a short time period. Like when you discover the entire web site has been hacked to forward to a bootleg pharmacy site. The editorial policy of the website is available on the site. Some familiarity with the current policy, and an interest in upholding or improving on these traditions would be to your advantage.

The Webminister is not responsible for the Barony’s social media presence, as this is a function of the Seneschal’s office by society policy. Some coordination with the Seneschal or Social Media Deputy may be required, but they tend to be really nice about it.

If you are interested in standing for this position, please submit a letter of intent to the Webminister and Seneschal before the next officers’ meeting, which will be on April 5th, 2017. Candidates should be at the meeting if possible, as the elected officer will be expected at future meetings for the duration of their 2-year term.

Call for Letters: Webminister

My term as your Webminister is up in April, and while I am perfectly willing to continue doing this job, I will not be offended if somebody else would like a chance.

The Webminister is responsible for the official Baronial web site and its related functions. The Webminister updates the information on the web site as necessary, such as when office holders change or a new calendar event is announced. Knowledge of HTML and basic web design is required. Some functions of the web site are written in PHP, and an understanding of PHP would be helpful. You must have a reliable computer, Internet connection, and email address. Most changes to the current site can be made in a text editor and uploaded via FTP, so no special software is required.

The Webminister is also responsible for maintaining and administrating the Baronial Blog. The Debatable Blog uses the WordPress system and all interactions with the site are through a web interface. Some knowledge of WordPress usage and administration would be helpful.

The Webminister is not responsible for the Barony’s social media presence, as this is a function of the Seneschal’s office by society policy. Some coordination with the Seneschal or Social Media Deputy will doubtless be required, however.

If you are interested in standing for this position, please submit a letter of intent to the Webminister and Seneschal before the next officers’ meeting, which will be on April 5th, 2017.

Dancemaster Call for Letters

The Honorable Lord Cai writes:

Greetings to the Barony from Cai o’r Llyn, Baronial Dancemaster!

I’ve served as the Barony’s dancemaster for over 10 years (how long exactly is lost to the mists of time), and I feel it is time for me to step down. As a result, I am calling for Letters of Intent to take my place.

Letters of intent should include a brief SCA resume, especially including experience with SCA dance. Letters should be sent to myself (jeffhos[at]gmail[dot]com) and the A&S Minister (ansminister[at]debatablelands[dot]org), and received by April 6th, as a replacement will be selected at the officers meeting that night.

The job of Baronial Dancemaster involves hosting a regular baronial dance practice (Regularity is up to you; I ran it weekly for many years before switching to monthly when there was less interest). It may also involve running balls and teaching dance at local events.

If you have any questions about the position, feel free to contact me!

— Cai

Call for Letters, Captain of Archers

Greetings Unto the Debatable Lands, Canton of Steltonwald and College of Cour d’Or from your Captain of Archers, Brandubh,

It has been my great pleasure to serve as the Baronial Captain of Archers for the past 2 years, however now I am being pulled in a different direction and must relinquish the Archery Marshallate. To that end I am calling for letters on intent for Debatable Lands Captain of Archers to serve as Group Marshal for the Barony. Letters of intent should include a brief SCA resume, especially including service as target archery marshal, running ranges, teaching, running practices, assisting at any of these, and be addressed to Brandubh – Captain of Archers, and Count Isenwulf – Baronial Knight marshal. I stepped up to this position in April 2014, and plan to step down in April 2016.

Now onto the job itself. The position of Captain of Archers is a deputy position to the Group Office of the Knight Marshal. Captain of archers is not an office, and does not have a vote on the financial committee. The job itself is to ensure that weekly practices are run, and announcements go out about their schedules, or cancellations; to serve as the Archery Point of contact for the barony; and to assist local events with archery. The barony has many loaner bows, arrows, targets, and stands which must be inventoried for the exchequer each year. Outdoor practices usually run from April 15 – November 15, depending on weather.

If you are interested in this position please feel free to contact me.

Cheers,
Brandubh, Baronial Captain of Archers
