Call For Letters: A+S Minister

Greetings Debatable Lands, from your Arts and Sciences Minister.

My term comes to an end this February. I am fully willing to commit to a second 2-year term, but I am required by courtesy and policy to request letters. If you are interested in being the next Minister of Arts and Sciences, please send a letter of intent to myself and the office of the Seneschal by January 31st, 2023.

This office is the best office in the Barony. There is all kinds of leeway to try new things in your pursuit of supporting arts, crafts, and research in the Barony. It’s still difficult to feel connected with the SCA at this point, so anything you have the energy to do to bring others together will certainly be appreciated. I have some things I’m still itching to implement, but new ideas are always welcome.

It has been my pleasure to serve you for the last year and ten months. I hope to continue and to up my game with more service for the next two years. However, more choice is always a good thing! Please submit your letters if you would like your chance sooner rather than later.

Seneschal – Call for Letters is Closed

I want to thank everyone that considered sending in a letter and sent in a letter. The deadline passed yesterday 28 December 2019. The official vote for our new seneschal will take place at the 5 February 2020 business meeting.

I don’t have the words to truly express what an honor and a privilege it has been to serve the Barony as its Seneschal for the last four years. Thank you to everyone that made my job a true pleasure and I look forward to seeing how my successor will serve you.

Call for Letters – Seneschal

After nearly four years serving this fine Barony, it is time for me to step down as your Seneschal. I am officially calling for letters and requesting that letters be sent to me (seneschal at debatablelands.org) and the Baron (baron at debatablelands.org) and Baroness (baroness at debatablelands.org) by 28 December 2019.

The job of Seneschal is rewarding and unexpectedly difficult at times. It is a way to serve the fine populace of the Debatable Lands in a deep, meaningful way. Take time with your decision and ask many questions. There are quite a few former Seneschals in the Barony still participating (Baroness Hilda being one of them) that are your resources for the reality of the everyday job. If you are interested in becoming the Seneschal and want more information about what the job entails, please contact me directly and I will be happy to talk with you about what the needs are and how the Seneschal serves the Barony. There are also online resources such as the Seneschal’s Handbook (http://socsen.scaserver.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Seneschals-Handbook-January-2018.2.pdf) that you can use to inform yourself before making a decision.

I don’t have the words to truly express what an honor and a privilege it has been to serve the Barony as its Seneschal for the last several years.

My term is officially over in February, however, I want to ensure that there is enough time for people to make informed choices prior to submitting a letter. Again, remember that the deadline for letters is 28 December 2019. Thank you all for your time and for allowing me to be your Seneschal for the last four years.

I have always believed in the exceptionalness of the Debatable Lands and still do. You are all amazing, talented, intelligent, and skilled people in your own ways and having a vantage point where I could best see so many of you was one of the great joys of my life.

Chronicler Call for Letters

Good evening Debatable Lands!

The time has come to end my first term as Chronicler. While if no Gentle steps forward I will continue to serve as the Barony’s Chronicler, I am not actively seeking a second term and assuming someone else would like the experience I will happily discuss with them the responsibilities that accompany the office.

The next issue of the Althing will be the last of this term and I would like to thank everyone that helped me succeed. From officers submitting reports to those members of guilds and the general populace that have submitted content, thank you so much.

The vote for the next Chronicler of the Debatable Lands will be held at the December business meeting. This meeting is on December 4th and all are welcome to attend no matter if you’re an officer or not.

No matter the outcome I will hold the office until December 31st and the changing of the guard of the pen will happen with the turning of the new year.

All letters of intent are due to the Senechal Meesteress Odriana no later than 7 days prior to the meeting on November 27th. She can be reached by email at Senechal@debatablelands.org.

Please contact me at Chronicler@debatablelands.org if you have any questions regarding the position or, as always, to submit content if you’d like to include in my final issue.

As always, thank all of you for everything,

Drottin Skjoldrbjorn
Debatable Chronicler

Call for Letters — Minister of Arts and Sciences

Greetings to the Barony from your Minister of Arts and Sciences!

It has been my privilege and great pleasure to serve the Barony-Marche of the Debatable Lands as the Minister of Arts and Sciences for two years. My term is coming to an end and so I call for letters from anyone who wishes to run for the office. I will not be seeking a second term, as I would like to work on activating the Food Guild.

My activities for the last two years have been:
** Collecting information on A&S-related activities in the Barony and reporting it to the Kingdom.
** Encouraging others to explore the arts and sciences by holding regular meetings with interesting guests who demonstrate their expertise in many and varied activities.
** Participating in activities such as demos and classes to support the wider A&S community.

Should you have questions about the duties associated with this position, please email me at ansminister@debatablelands.org.

Any gentle who would be considered for this two-year position is invited to send an email with a list of qualifications to me at ansminister@debatablelands.org and to the Seneshale, Meestres Odriana vander Brugghe, at seneschal@debatablelands.org.

In service to the Barony-Marche,
THL Elss of Augsburg
BMDL Minister of Arts and Sciences

Call for Letters: Webminister

My term as your Webminister expires next month, and while I am willing to continue doing this job, I am also willing to give somebody else a chance. I can even serve as deputy to the new Webminister until they get their feet under them, if necessary. Heh, “web feet”.

The Webminister is responsible for the official Baronial web site and its related functions. The Webminister updates the information on the web site as requested, such as when office holders change or a new event is announced. Knowledge of HTML and basic web design is required. Some functions of the web site are written in PHP, and an understanding of PHP would be helpful. You must have a reliable computer, Internet connection, and email address. Your ZX81, 300 baud modem, and AOL address are probably not sufficient. Most changes to the current site can be made in a text editor and uploaded via FTP, so no special software is required. The web site is hosted by a commercial service provider, so the ability to pay hosting and domain registration fees via credit card is required, though you will be reimbursed by the Barony after you make payment.

The Webminister is also responsible for maintaining the list of email aliases. The hosting service also provides email forwarding so that senders can always send email to a Baronial officer without having to remember who currently holds that office and what that person’s address is. Updating the list of aliases involves logging into the hosting provider’s domain management web interface, so some ability to deal with that kind of thing is required. We always have problems with forwarded email landing in spam folders, so dealing with email problems is a constant task.

The Webminister is also responsible for maintaining and administrating the Baronial Blog. The Debatable Blog uses the WordPress system and all interactions with the site are through a web interface. Some knowledge of WordPress usage and administration would be helpful. If I stay as Webminister, I’m going to pester officers a lot more to post things to the blog.

The job of Webminister is not constant. It mostly consists of small amounts of work on a irregular basis, but occasionally requires a large amount of work in a short time period. Like when you discover the entire web site has been hacked to forward to a bootleg pharmacy site. The editorial policy of the website is available on the site. Some familiarity with the current policy, and an interest in upholding or improving on these traditions would be to your advantage.

The Webminister is not responsible for the Barony’s social media presence, as this is a function of the Seneschal’s office by society policy. Some coordination with the Seneschal or Social Media Deputy may be required, but they tend to be really nice about it.

If you are interested in standing for this position, please submit a letter of intent to the Webminister and Seneschal before the next officers’ meeting, which will be on April 5th, 2017. Candidates should be at the meeting if possible, as the elected officer will be expected at future meetings for the duration of their 2-year term.
