Reminder: Pennsic Pre-Reg Deadline June18th

Hello! Here’s another reminder that Pennsic Pre-Registration ends June 18th! If you want to camp with the Debatable Lands, you MUST pre-reg, paid!

Here’s some info from the Pennsic folks:

Online prepaid registration for Pennsic will end on June 18th, 11:59pm EDT. With that in mind here are a few questions that have come up frequently for us at the Land Office:

Q: How much space is allotted to a group or camper per paid pre-registration?
A: About 250 square feet per person.

Q: Does an unpaid pre-registration reserve space for my group?
A: No, it does not. Unpaid pre-registrations are purely to provide convenience at troll, as your information will already be available in the computer system.

News from Ice Dragon

Hello Debatable Lands!

Our Most Excellent Barony really shone at Ice Dragon this weekend. We’re still waiting to hear more about the Pent and fighting, but there’s some exciting news we couldn’t wait to celebrate!

Mistress Irene von Schmetterling won the Artisans Division of the A&S Pentathalon, and Mistress Fredeburg von Katzenellenbogen won the Laurel Division! Vivant!

Also, a hearty shout out to those artisans who entered for the first time: Lady Luceta di Cosimo, Lady Edana the Red, THL Rachel Dalicieux, and Duchess Siobhan.

Even more Debatable Landers entered and placed in Pent categories, and were even recognized in Court. And never forget service! Our folks judged the Pent, served Their Highnesses, and were rock-star MOLs (looking at you, Baronesses Anna and Soteria!) More info coming, as we get it.

On the martial end of things, Debatable Lands Rapier fighters took FIVE of the six top spots in the dagger and buckler tourney: Master Will Parris, Don Clewin, Dona Fredeburg, Lord Markus, and THL Elaine! Round Robin tourney participants included THL Fiora, Lord Robert, Lord Markus, Countess Elena. And Don Clewin made it to the final 8 portion and tied Duchess Dorinda for 5th place! Vivant!

We haven’t heard news about the heavy fighting yet, but rumor has it that Duke Sven did really well. We’ll let you know when we hear more.

Comment here if we missed anyone – it was a busy day!

Pre-registrations are still being accepted until April 9th! Please take note that there is no longer a feast, so do not include feast fees in your pre-registration.

Cooking event at War Practice

Edelvrouw Lijsbet de Keukere writes about an event at Aethelmearc War Practice in our canton of Steltonwald in May.

If you are a baker, join us!
If you are a baker, a butcher, a saucier,
A fry-er, A boil-er, a sugar paste sculptor…
If you love to cook, come add fuel to our fire,
For your passion and skills we want you to show us.

Introducing The Scarlet Apron – a new cooking competition to be held at AEthelmearc War Practice (May 19-22, 2016)!

This competition is open to any and all comers who have a penchant for the medieval culinary arts. No matter if you are new to period cooking, or if it is old hat to you, you are welcome at our table!

The theme for our inaugural year is sure to be a feast for the eyes as well as the belly – Illusion Food! Anyone wishing to participate must create an example of such a food from anywhere in SCA-period. This could be an interpretation of a subtlety that has been described in a cooking text, or an original creation that can be considered “period-plausible” based on its design, construction and the materials used to create it.

All contestants should follow these guidelines:

1. The entry should be made and assembled prior to judging – this is not a competition at which contestants must cook their final product on site.

2. The finished product should be constructed from at least 50% edible
material.

3. The use of period construction techniques, including internal shaping structures and edible ingredients is preferred and encouraged.

4. The final product should be registered, signed in, and ready for judging by 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 21. The judging will take place in the Great Hall alongside the A&S competition. [ed.note: There is no A&S competition]
Registration/sign-in will open Saturday at 10:00 AM. The final judging will occur between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM, with the winner announced during court that evening.

5. Contestants should provide a brief written overview (one page, maximum) of their entry, including their inspiration (if it was based on a specific subtlety, the original text of its description; if it was based on something else, then those details), a complete list of the materials used, and a description of how they created the structure.

6. Contestants can choose to sit with their entry during the judging period in order to answer questions from the judges and the populace, however it is not required.

7. Plating and presentation are integral to this competition. Each contestant will get no less than half of a six- or eight-foot table, which should be adorned as befits the entry.

Entries have three potential categories to win: Youth (for contestants age 5-12), Populace Choice, and Overall Winner. Cooks of all skill levels are encouraged to enter!

Any questions should be directed to the competition coordinator, Edelvrouw Lijsbet de Keukere (lijsbet(dot)vandelfthout(at)gmail(dot)com, “Keirin Lazauskas-Ralff” on Facebook). We are so excited about this competition, and are looking forward to seeing the beautiful and delicious pieces of art you create!

Investiture Clean Up: Volunteers Needed!

Kameshima-shichi-i Zentarō Umakai writes:

Next weekend, as you all know, we will be celebrating the well-earned retirement of our Baron Uilliam and Baroness Constance and the investiture of Brandubh and Hilderun! Once again, our host will be the United Universalist Church of the North Hills, a site that we use frequently and with which we have cultivated an excellent working relationship. Key to this relationship is the fact that we always leave the site in  exquisitely clean condition.

I have been given the honor of ensuring that this precedent remains intact after the upcoming event. But to do that, I will need your help!

If you are willing to stay after the event and help return the site to at least as good condition as we found it, please contact me at this email address and let me know. If we get a good crew together, it should only take about an hour, and you will be helping to make sure that we can continue to use this site in the future. Thank you in advance for volunteering to help your Barony.

The Arts and Sciences Champion Writes

Hara-roku-i Kikumatsu, the current Arts and Sciences Champion of the Barony Marche of the Debatable Lands, writes:

To all those who live and play in the BMDL, my time as A&S champion is almost over. The new Baron and Baroness will need a new champion to stand behind them in court and to represent them in the seven pearls in late August. Any person or group is encouraged to enter the competion. There are no restrictions on experience level. The site is dry, but an alcoholic entry can be judged prior to the event. You must contact me ahead of time to make arrangements. Documentation isn’t required, but is highly encouraged.
