Baronial Election News

Salve Accolens Debatable Lands!

We have great news, the deadline for Nominees to respond as to whether they would accept and run for the Baronetcy of the Debatable Lands has passed. We are pleased to announce that all 18 sets of nominees have responded and three couples have accepted the nominations to campaign for the Office of the Baronage of the Debatable Lands. Those that have accepted the call are:

Sir Maghnus an Chnoic na n’Iora and Brehyres Gwendolyn the Graceful

THLady Violeta de Valencia and THLady Aurelia Argentia Prima

Lord Skjoldr Bjorn and Lady Arthes MacLeod

We applaud these gentles, and look forward to working with all of them over the next couple months as the elections progress. Vivant to all of them!

The Selection Committee needs some time to finalize the design of the ballots and other administrative matters. Ballots will be mailed approximately early January, and we will continue to communicate with you on that. Please make sure your mailing address on file with Corporate is correct and membership is up to date.

The ballot counting meeting has been set for Sunday, March 5th at our March Barony Social Meeting at the Rose Barn in North Park. Details to follow at a later time.

Cheers,

Brandubh et Hilderun

Online sewing Thurs Dec 15 at 7:30pm

There is another online sewing tomorrow, Thursday Dec 15th at 7:30pm in the kingdom zoom. One topic that I will be discussing is in-person sewing dates and fabric recommendations. There is another Japanese Iris Festival and Equestrian event on June 10th. I will be hosting in-person sewing at my house Feb 11, 18, and 25 to provide supervision for making basic Japanese garments kosode and hakama pants or skirt. The kosode is the precursor to the modern kimono, and hakama are the pants with baggy legs. If you want to participate, you need to have fabric prepared and cut. At the December and January sewing circle, I’ll make fabric recommendations, and help you figure out the amount you will need. Also I can only host a few people at my house without running out of table space. So I will need to know if you plan to attend and if you will be bringing a sewing machine. I am asking folks to mask, but I hope to have air-filters in heated garage for a place to eat and drink.

There is also a plan to have sewing area downstairs at the March Barony meeting for folks that want to sew there.

For zoom information or if you have questions about sewing circle or in-person Japanese sewing please contact sewing (at) debatablelands (dot) org.

Call For Letters: A+S Minister

Greetings Debatable Lands, from your Arts and Sciences Minister.

My term comes to an end this February. I am fully willing to commit to a second 2-year term, but I am required by courtesy and policy to request letters. If you are interested in being the next Minister of Arts and Sciences, please send a letter of intent to myself and the office of the Seneschal by January 31st, 2023.

This office is the best office in the Barony. There is all kinds of leeway to try new things in your pursuit of supporting arts, crafts, and research in the Barony. It’s still difficult to feel connected with the SCA at this point, so anything you have the energy to do to bring others together will certainly be appreciated. I have some things I’m still itching to implement, but new ideas are always welcome.

It has been my pleasure to serve you for the last year and ten months. I hope to continue and to up my game with more service for the next two years. However, more choice is always a good thing! Please submit your letters if you would like your chance sooner rather than later.

Largesse Needed for Hael Investiture Dec 17th

Hello Debatable Lands! Salve Accolens!

In just under two weeks, we will be traveling to the Barony of Rhydderech Hael (Buffalo, NY), to witness the Investiture of their New Baron and Baroness. It’s traditional in our Kingdom for other Baronies to gift the new Coronet with Largesse they can use during their tenure, as an act of camaraderie.

Why largesse? All landed folks (Kingdom Royals and landed Baronage) and lots of other people use gifts to individuals to show appreciation, welcome, and to set an example of our strong values of generosity and hospitality. Many (most?) of you have received tokens or gifts from our hands, or the King and Queen, or even members of the populace. Doesn’t it feel great to be appreciated?

If you can donate any largesse to add to the gift basket for the Hael, please contact the Baron and/or Baroness, either by email, phone, or social media (see below) before Dec 17th. The colors of the Barony of the Rhydderech Hael are green and gold, with black accents, and their mascot is a golden dragon (as in Ice Dragon… eh? eh?).

We will be similarly traveling to the Barony of Delftwood in February for the Investiture of *their* new Baronage. Their colors are blue and white/silver, and their totem is a windmill.

Thank you so much for whatever you might be able to provide!

In Levitate et Caritate, and Cheers,
Baron Brandubh and Baroness Hilda

Martial Practices move inside Dec. 4th

Practice for Heavy, Fencing and Thrown Weapons will be moving indoors to our winter site, Ace Axe Throwing, starting this Sunday, December 4th. Hours for practice will be 11am to 3pm. Until we have an approved safety plan in place, masks will be required per the current kingdom covid policy.

This year the site is booked the third Sunday of every month for another organization. We will not have access for those days.

Additionally, since Christmas falls on a Sunday we will not be holding practice on the 25th.

Debatable Lands 12th Night message from Head Tollner!

Greetings from Baron Alaric, the Debatable Lands 12th Night Head Tollner!

We are excited to hold this event and are looking forward to seeing you there! As part of the risk mitigation for Covid, the event attendance is limited to 150 people, including both attendees and event staff. Our event steward, Lady Forveleth, has provided a link for to pre-register for the event:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScrohwjL41VhIi5IX2TN_suDnNXNDyWHNLeqVxLYWTyG3Ddmw/viewform

While not strictly required, we highly recommend that anyone who is attending the event sign up so we can have an accurate count available the day of the event. Once the count of 150 attendees is reached, we will have to turn away anyone who is not pre-registered for the event. We really don’t want to do that.

Event pre-registration will be open until one of the following occurs:

1. We reach 150 pre-registered attendees.
2. 8pm on January 13th, 2023.

If you have pre-registered but decide not to attend, please let us know before 8pm on January 13th so we can make your spot available for others to attend. This decision can be communicated via the pre-registration form by selecting “No”.

We will endeavor to communicate as best we can when the attendance limit is reached in order to prevent a trip to the event that may result in you being turned away at the door.

Troll will be open until 3pm to please plan to arrive before that time. There will be no admittance to the event after that time, unless special arrangements are made in advance (contact the Head Toller at alaric@pobox.com).

Also please remember to check in at Troll when you arrive. This is a free event but we still need to see proof of SCA membership or collect your name and signature on a waiver.

Safe travels everyone.

In Service,

Baron Alaric
