Brewers Guild Bittering Experiment – Starting 6/12

War Practice proved fun and productive for the BMDL Brewers!
Jorundr taught a class on this year’s hyppocras experiment (different herb blends in the same base wine), and I taught a class on our yeast experiment (different yeasts in the same base must – honey and water).

We are now looking ahead to Pennsic and our next experiment – bittering agents used in ales. Hops were not nearly as common in period as they are now, so we will be showcasing four other herbs used to bitter/flavor this beloved malty beverage.

The June meeting for the guild is Wednesday, 6/12, at Lady Alysoun’s house in Pleasant Hills. Official start time is 7pm, but since all-grain brewing takes all evening, feel free to stop by as early as 4.

Business Meeting Today

The Business Meeting will be held today, Wednesday, 5 June 2019, from 8:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. at Allegheny Unitarian Universalist Church (416 W North Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15212 – map).

The Agenda is:

  1. Open Meeting
  2. Approve the minutes from the previous meeting.
  3. Officers Reports
  4. Policy Review (the current policies of the Barony are located here)
  5. Close Meeting

Changes that we are required to make to our current policy to bring us in line with current Society Policy is to replace:
IV.A. General Financial
Expenditures greater than $75 must be approved by a simple majority of the Financial Committee. Expenditures of $75 or under may be authorized jointly by the Baronial Seneschal and Exchequer. Such expenditures must be reported at the following officers meeting. The Seneschal and Exchequer must be represented at any meeting of the financial committee.

IV.A. General Financial
All expenditures must be approved by a simple majority of the Financial Committee.

The Officers of the Debatable Lands are elected by the membership and is made up of members of the populace, just like you. The Officers are responsible for ensuring that the policies of the Kingdom and Barony are followed and are accountable to the populace of the Debatable Lands. The Business meeting is open to everyone in the Barony and attendance by the populace is encouraged.

Kingdom-wide A&S Challenge!

Greetings to the Populace artisans of AEthelmearc from THL Eleanore Godwin, Kingdom Deputy A&S Minister.

Announcing a new A&S challenge for the artisans of the Kingdom: A one year long Event Token Competition, running from Spring AEcademy 2019 to Spring AEcademy 2020!

How many event tokens have you kept over the years because they are great memories, or just beautiful? Well, we want groups to up their game and put some thought into their event tokens!

So, how does one participate you ask? Volunteer to make your group’s tokens for an event they put on!

First; every group can have at least one entry, and as many as three!

Second; groups have from June 15th 2019 Spring AEcademy to Spring (June date to be announced) AEcademy 2020 to make tokens for their events and present their entries for the competition at Spring AEcademy 2020.

Divisions are :1. Kingdom Event tokens, and 2. All Other Events tokens. The reason for this is that the Kingdom events often have a higher budget for tokens, whereas non-kingdom events do not

Categories are: A. Period tokens, B. Useful tokens, and C. Creative tokens.
Each group may have 1 entry in each category, for a max of three total entries. One token, one category. So, if your group hosted a Kingdom event, the token from that event would be put in the Kingdom Event token Division, in one of the three Categories, Period, Useful, or Creative. If your group hosted a regular event, that token can be entered in one of the 2. All
Other Events tokens Divisions Categories, A,B, or C. If your group held 3 regular events in the time frame, your group gets to enter 3 different tokens in 3 different categories! If your group held one Kingdom event, that token gets to be entered into the Kingdom Division in one of the three Categories. Say your group also held two regular event; those two tokens would be entered in the All Other Events token Division in two of the three categories for a total of 3 entries!

I think this will be an exciting year for the artisans of AEthelmearc, and I look forward to seeing all the entries at Spring AEcademy next Spring!

Thrown Weapons at Highland Park

Konichiwa Debatable Lands! Tomorrow, Sunday June 2nd, there will indeed be thrown weapons practice at Highland Park. Come out and throw with us! Loaner Gear will be available! Practice will be from 11-2pm. As a reminder, The Baronial Thrown Weapons Tourney will be next week, June 9th at the practice site at Highland Park. Come on out and vie for the right to represent the Barony at Pennsic and at the 7 Pearls Championship!!
