Tomorrow is the last Archery Practice of the season!

Greetings Archers of BMDL!

Sorry for the late notice, but tomorrow from 11am – 3pm will be the FINAL practice for BMDL archery before we break for the winter season. Join us as we hone our skills, have some end of the year food and drink, and enjoy one last practice together in 2020.

Thank you again to Kieran and Odriana for inviting us to use their land as our archery range while use of public spaces is discouraged. We couldn’t have had any of these practices without you. Vivat!

The address of the site is 3000 Harts Run Road, Allison Park, PA 15101. To get there from the city, head north on Route 8 and make a right on Harts Run Road, then after 1 mile their house is on the right side. The driveway for the site is a small bridge. Look for the SCA sign!

Parking will be in the empty lot of Virgin Flooring (2984 Harts Run Rd on Google maps). Anyone who needs to may drive directly up to the site to drop off people or equipment before heading to the parking lot.

We want to do this as safely as possible, so the following safety and social-distancing guidelines will be put in place:

– Masks must be properly worn at all times (covering both nose AND mouth).
– No sharing equipment. This includes bows, arrows, gloves, armguards, etc.
– The loaner gear will NOT be available.
– Only the marshals can handle another person’s bow, arrows, or equipment, and only for inspections.
– Maintain 6 ft. of separation when shooting on the line and when waiting in line to shoot. The ground will be appropriately marked with cones.
– When retrieving arrows, only one person per target may retrieve their arrows at the same time.
– Only one person at a time can be under the canopy at the water cooler and hand washing station.
– Marshals will be monitoring the practice and reminding people to adhere to these guidelines.
– This is a practice for archers only. Please do not come just to socialize.
– DO NOT COME TO PRACTICE IF YOU ARE NOT FEELING WELL OR ARE ESPECIALLY SUSCEPTIBLE TO ILLNESS

These rules will be reviewed with everyone prior to the beginning of practice. In addition to these guidelines, I will do my best to ensure there is hand sanitizer, hand wipes, a hand washing station, etc. available for staying clean. Being considerate of the health and safety of our populace is greatly appreciated!

If anyone has additional questions or concerns regarding the practice please reach out to me at archerymarshal@debatablelands.org.

Stay safe out there!

ARCHERY PRACTICE IS BACK!

Archers of BMDL, the moment we’ve all been waiting for is finally here! This Sunday from 11am-3pm, archery practice is back on! (though not in the usual place)

Given the current state of things, we will NOT be having practice at the Washington Blvd site where we can’t control who shows up or who follows our social-distancing rules. But thanks to the generous offer of Mistress Odriana and Master Kieran, we can use the field next to their house, which has ample space for all of our stick-throwing needs!

*NOTE: At this time, we are asking that only the archers attend this practice. If you aren’t there to shoot, then please do not attend. In addition, loaner gear will not be provided.

The address of the site is 3000 Harts Run Road, Allison Park, PA 15101. To get there from the city, head north on Route 8 and make a right on Harts Run Road, then after 1 mile their house is on the right side. The driveway for the site is a small bridge. Look for the SCA sign!

A Challenge For You!

Hello Debatable Lands! Salve Accolens!

We, your Baron and Baroness, hereby challenge you! In these strange times, it can be difficult to feel the camaraderie, the warmth, the connection among us all. We therefore issue this CONNECTION CHALLENGE:

Between now and the Baronial Social* on Sunday, we challenge those that would like to participate, to call three people that they have not heard the voice of since at least May of this year.

Feel free to use the phone, video chat in the app of your choice, or even an in-person call/visit (all proper precautions, please). CONNECT with your voice, to those folks you have been missing.

And then tell us about it, if you can! Bring your stories from this week to the Social Meeting* on the 20th (1pm), or post to your social media, or our email list. Let’s hear about our connections!

Can we all together make 100 connections? Let’s try!

In Levitate et Caritate, and Cheers,
Baron Brandubh and Baroness Hilda

_________

Barony Meeting and Social is on Sunday, September 20th, at 1 pm via Zoom. We’re celebrating AEthelmearc Day, and our connections! Link to the Zoom Room will be posted on our email list, and in the Facebook event (https://www.facebook.com/events/237731854325937) closer to the date of the Social.

Input Requested: Baronial Activities Online

Hello Debatable Lands! Salve Accolens!

By now, you may have heard that the SCA Board of Directors, at the behest of most of the Kingdoms, has suspended all in-person SCA activity until at least January 31, 2021.

Here’s the announcement:
https://www.sca.org/news/resolution-to-suspend-in-person-sca-activity-until-january-31st-2021/

There are provisions for small gatherings like meetings and martial practices, when it is safe and within local regulation to do so. Here in Allegheny County, that may be awhile, as cases of the virus do not seem to be decreasing.

While we can’t hold in-person events, we can continue our activity online! We’d like to hear from YOU! What would you like to see from our Barony over the next 6 months? What would you like to organize and run? Let’s get creative! What shall we do for Barony meetings? For Baronial Courts? Other online gatherings?

What would ignite the fun, passion, and camaraderie?

We’re looking forward to the conversations!

In Levitate et Caritate, Cheers, and In Service,

Baron Brandubh
Baroness Hilda
THL Muirgheal, Baronial Seneschal

Scroll & Award Tour of the Debatable Lands – 6/20

From the vibrant mind of Lady Tierrany Rose Orre:

On Saturday, June 20th at 1pm, we’d love to invite all to participate in a virtual show-and-tell Scroll and Award Tour, via Zoom!

We invite everyone to come and watch, but hope lots will participate in the tour!

If you’d like to join the fun, please choose anywhere from one to five of your favorite scrolls, tokens, and/or awards to share via your webcam, then bring us all on a little trip down Memory Lane, telling us a bit about where, when, and how you received them. It can be as simple as a token received from your favorite Queen’s hand or as ornate as a treasured scroll crafted by a friend. We’d love to see and hear about your items of honor!

We hope this will be a fun chance for our populace to learn a bit about each other, revisit pleasant times past, and view some of the beautiful pieces of artistry the members of our Kingdom (and perhaps others!) have created. Chances are pretty good that you have an item made by one of our barony’s gifted artists… imagine how seeing it once again will make your scribe’s day!

We envision this as a great opportunity to create deeper connections in these disconnected times. Hope to see you there!

Zoom link, when available, will be provided as a reply on the email list, and in the Facebook event page:

Food Guild News

Salve! Greetings, Food Friends!

The next meeting of the Food Guild will be on
Saturday, February 29, about 1 pm to 5 pm
at the house of the Baron and Baroness.

We will be having fun with Roman cooking! On the agenda to make will be Mulsum, Boiled Eggs with Pine Nut Sauce, Libum, and Dulcia Domestica.
There will be substitutions due to nut
allergies. Please contact me at Elss.of.Augsburg @ gmail.com
if you have questions about ingredients.

There is limited information on roman cooking, so you will need to start researching by looking at De Re Coquinaria by
Apicius. Of course, it was written in Latin originally, but there are original text and translated text all over the place. For those who don’t have a copy, here is a translation in English : http://penelope.uchicago.edu/Thayer/E/Roman/Texts/Apicius/home.html

There are many translations of Apicius, but not a lot of adaptions of the recipes themselves. Here’s one that has redacted a few of the recipes:

Sorry about the size of this thing, but the blog doesn’t forward links to the email list, so I have to put the whole site name in.

By the way, I peruse medieval cookbooks from all over the world online from here: http://medievalcookery.com/etexts.html.

Please contact me at Elss.of.Augsburg @ gmail.com or as Elss Augsburg on Facebook if you need the Baron/ess’s address or want to bring a contribution to the day.

Woodworking February 16th

The woodworking guild will have a shop day on Sunday, February 16th from 10am to 2pm at Ishiyama’s house. Our spring project this year is improving everybody’s Pennsic through the glory of seating. We will be researching and recreating period seating furniture that is appropriate for our personas.
