March Barony Meeting

The March Barony Meeting will be held on Sunday, 18 March 2018 at the Pittsburgh Chinese Church (map and directions) starting at 1:00 p.m. and going until around 3:30 p.m.

What do you have to look forward to? Updates from your officers, announcements, and the usual camaraderie. If you would like to share an event or something of interest to the Barony, contact the Comet Persuivant, Maighster Kieran MacRae at herald(at)debatablelands(dot)org before the meeting to get on the docket or just grab him before the meeting begins. If you’ve been thinking about an event or something that you would like to do or see in the Barony, this is a perfect time to talk with us.

Just following the meeting, come kick it old school and join Odriana for a recommendation letter writing Party (yes, that’s party with a capital P). There will be note cards, envelopes, postage, beverages, and some snacks. There will be some examples available for you to work from, there will be an internet connection so we can check the OP, and if you like to study beforehand, please check out the article on the Aethelmearc Gazette written by Duchess Dorinda and updated by our own Baroness Hildarun. There’s also a recent article from THL Madoc on the Gazette.

If you have any questions, please contact Odriana at jenn(dot)strobel@gmail(dot)com.

Spreading the word

Isn’t amazing when you find out how much fun something new is?

Last Friday I attended the demo at the Carnegie Science Center.  They hosted an evening event for adults over 21 to enjoy a medieval-themed evening. I loved the amount of people who were interested and enchanted by our wonderful Barony, Kingdom, and Society.

We had around 100 volunteers present to speak about different aspects of the society. Our Baron and Baroness helped party-goers take pictures that made them look like royalty. We were able to offer pictures with a prince or princess.  We performed, talked about fighting, archery, fencing, siege weapons, thrown weapons, A&S, and made the Science Center ring with our voices.  People fought and fenced for the entertainment of the people.  I spent the evening behind a table of archery and thrown weapons equipment.

People walked by and immediatly wanted to know more about what we did.  They wanted to handle our axes, crossbows, and more. They asked questions about everything from what we did to historical information and many wanted to know how to find more information and how to join in our fun. Several people were sad that we couldn’t throw axes right there, inside the Science Center.

Telling people about our hobby is always the most fun thing for me.  Between the myriad questions and excitement about something that I love, it always makes it a fun time that will never get old. Considering that this demo had over a thousand people that were some of the most interested people I’ve ever takled to it made it some of the most fun I’ve ever had in the SCA.

SCA Garb Basics

For March 8th’s A+S Meeting, let’s talk about garb

It's the Art-Signal! Quick, to the Science-Mobile!
Arts & Sciences Meeting

One of the things that sets the SCA apart from other organizations is that participants are required to make a reasonable attempt at dressing like medieval nobility when they attend our events. This is meant to encourage participation in the experience, but it can seem daunting when you are first getting started in the SCA.

Let’s have a garb basics round-table this Thursday where we can talk about our experiences getting started with SCA garb, show some examples of basic garb in different styles, and share some tips on how to overcome the basic fear of applying scissors to fabric.

Whether you’re a newcomer who needs to ask a pile of questions, an experienced SCAdian thinking of trying something new, or a garb expert with detailed help to offer, please meet with others in the Baronial Arts and Sciences community tomorrow night in Pittsburgh’s Southside.

We will be at Victory Pointe Gaming Lounge (and ice-cream parlor), upstairs in the game room, at 1113 Carson Street on the South Side, March 8th starting at 7 PM. Come early if you wish, people start arriving about 6:45.

Upstairs is not handicap accessible, so if you need assistance or have questions, please call me at 412-596-2204.

Be sure to park safely — feed the meter if needed. They ticket like crazy on the South Side. I think the best place is across the street in the bank parking lot.

Yours in service,
Ishiyama Gen’tarou Yori’ie
(Arts and Sciences Deputy)

Althing submission deadline

Just a reminder, the submission deadline for populace content and officers reports for the Althing is March 15th!

No matter if you want to talk about upcoming events or period art, submit everything and anything to Chronicler@Debatablelands.org.

Carnegie Science Center Demo Thanks

From Lady Zianna:

I will try my best to express my deepest thank yous to EVERYONE that made last night’s demo at the Carnegie Science Center an amazing event. There was such an overwhelming feeling of interest in what we do on a daily basis that so many people – “Had no idea that other people wanted to do this too.” That was a quote from a guest standing in front of our pewter pouring display. To give you an idea of the impact we had, let me describe the locations we had manned by over 100 people from our Kingdom.

On the Entrance/Main Floor we had our Royal Area. Their Highnesses sat for pictures – processed down three floors being led by Heralds followed by an army of fencers! Their Excellencies took hundreds and I mean HUNDREDS of photos with guests sitting on the thrones! It was a glorious site to see when guests entered. “This was more fun than I thought it would be.” Probably one of the best things I heard all night. Thank you!

Guests walked past our siege weapons to make it upstairs. I was walking down the ramp and heard – “That’s the largest ballistics I have ever seen in person!” Thank you!

We took over the space lab with Archery – Combat Archery – Thrown Weapons – and Swords. So much that we used the last table that the CSC had! And we could have used more! The displays were stunning and could be seen from four floors as people walked from floor to floor. I was two floors up and a guest said – “Who cares about the rocket thing – I want to play with the axes!” Thank you!

We had music on the mezzanine as people started their journey back in time. Thank you!

In the Science Stage – members of DragonSong played and we had our fire dancer – which we will have an even better space to allow for the fire next year. Thank you!

On the ground floor we had Barony and Kingdom Equestrian members letting guests slay dragons! The CSC event coordinator said to me: I had a blast in the saddle! He took his walkie off and put his phone down to be in our world! Thank you!

We had our bar up and running! Meads and cider – and the wrong chocolate (my fault completely) – lol… As I was passing by the bar I heard a guest ask – “Can I buy a bottle of that?” Guests were taking pictures of our notes and saying they wanted to try this at home. Thank you!

We had heavy fighting! Our new list ropes and corners worked well. We had all levels of fighters including Knights and Tuchux landing awesome shots! We had a rogue battle on the first floor and battles in front of Their Highnesses. Again in passing – while we had guests holding a weapon – Knight ready with his shield – I hear – “Can I really swing at him?” “Hit him!” Whack! “Oh that is so bad ass!” Thank you!

Arts and Sciences took over the second floor! There is no other way to describe it! We had music – pewter casting – illumination – calligraphy – embroidery – cording -armor display –weaving and looms – cooking – spinning – printing – OH MY!!!! People were so interested in what we were doing that I could not break in to hand out parking vouchers! Thank you!

The Third Floor had fencing duels continuously! Silva Vulcani and Ballachlagan spread knowledge and fun over the lands. As well as made sure the banners were put up and taken down. Please note that there were over 150 banners displayed. Thank You!

We took over the stairwell to sing Banners of Scarlet on four floors. That was amazing! People stopped, listened, and watched. And we all felt the unity as the drum rang out and we looked up and down seeing people singing on all floors. Thank you!

We had two merchants who added opportunities for the guests to take a piece of the evening home with them. Knights of the Classroom (who also provided the banners for the evening) and A Case of Random. Thank you!

The other organizations that made it possible – Broken Plow – Pgh Armored Combat – Pgh Role Play – who were amazing to work with on the logistical side of things.

There are a few people that I need to personally thank for their time and assistance. I would not have been able to make this happen as easily as it was without them.

Their Highnesses and Their Excellencies
The door opener for this entire evening – Clewin
My floor contacts – Anlaith – Tor – Ells – Robert
My boots on the ground – Magni
My friends who aren’t even SCA members – Shag – Heather – Mike – Lyric
My most understanding roommate – Nick

What a wonderful evening and I look forward to the next demo at the Science Center. Thank you everyone. I do want to ask for any and all feedback. I want to know the good things and the bad things. There are for sure things that need to be improved on and/or can be done differently. Please email me at ziannaevents at gmail dot com with all of your input no matter how small you may think it is.
