Woodworking at Practice Tomorrow

The archers of the Debatable Lands are in need of some new target stands! The Woodworking Guild has been asked to help out by building a few more new stands, and what better place to do that than at Archery Practice? last week, we succeeded in making 1 new stand! Now that we know what we are doing, we hope to make at least 2 more tomorrow.

We’ll be meeting up at the Washington Boulevard Practice site tomorrow (Sunday, 2019.08.25) at around 11am to take care of that. Bring some hands tools or cordless tools if you have them. We probably need saws, drills, drill bits, wrenches, sanders, clamps, tape measures, pencils, sockets, and the like.

See you tomorrow!

Woodworking Guild Fall Schedule

This past Thursday, the Woodworking Guild of the Debatable Lands had our last planning meeting of summer, to figure out what we were going to do for autumn. Here is the plan:

Planning Meetings

These meetings are weeknight evening meetings, for the purpose of deciding what we want to work on next and when we’re going to do it. They are (roughly speaking) the second-to-last Thursday of each month,
7pm to 8:30pm, at the Panera in Oakland.

  • September 19th, 2019
  • October 24th, 2019
  • November 21st, 2019
  • December 19th, 2019

Workshop Days

These meetings are on weekend days, for the purpose of making things. They are usually on Sunday, from 10am to 2pm, in Ishiyama’s shop (1105 Shady Avenue, 15232).

  • September 15th, 2019
  • October 27th, 2019
  • November 17th, 2019
  • December 8th, 2019

All dates, times, and locations are subject to change, of course, but those are the plans.

Woodworking Guild planning meeting tomorrow

Please join us tomorrow (Thursday, August 22nd) at 7pm at the Panera in Oakland (the one on the Boulevard of the Allies, the one that used to be a Howard Johnson’s) to help plan out meetings, projects, and workshop days for the autumn. Did you learn to make something cool at Pennsic? What would you love to learn to make now that Pennsic is over and you’ve seen ten thousand other peoples’ cool stuff? I hate to bring it up so early, when it isn’t even Labor Day yet, but this is the best time to start planning out what your winter holiday presents are going to be. Sit down with us, have some tea and a pastry, and talk it out. Bring your planners and calendars!

What was “the banner stand project”?

Now it can be told! Last year after Pennsic, Baroness Hilda asked Ishiyama if he would make silk banners for the Barony to gift to the other Baronies of Æthelmearc as favors for the “7 Pearls Dinner” at this year’s Pennsic War. These banners would also need stands and support poles. The stands and poles were a perfect way to enlist the help of the Woodworking Guild.

The Seven Pearls banners and their banner stands

The stands are made from 2×4 lumber, which keeps the costs down, but creates a little bit more work. Each is made from four identical legs and four identical cross-pieces, so mass-production of pieces sped the whole project along. Once you remove the support pole, the off-center hinge pin lets the stand fold flat for travel.

There are enough extra pieces left over that if you need one of these stands for your very own, just let the guild know and we can help you put one together.

Free “Roman Workbenches” PDF

Christopher Schwarz, now of his own publishing company, Lost Art Press, has decided to make his treatise on Roman Workbenches available as a free download.

https://lostartpress.files.wordpress.com/2019/07/roman-workbenches-1.pdf

His new book traces the history of workbenches forward through the end of the medieval period, so maybe check that out if you’re interested in that kind of thing.

Woodworking at Pennsic

The Honorable Lord Kai Saerprenn reports that he will be running his Intro to Woodworking series again this year at Pennsic. This set of classes takes you from raw logs (Really! He gets his materials from the firewood people at firewood prices.) to furniture by showing you all the tools used along the way (and how to sharpen them).

These classes are taught in THL Kai’s camp of Hus Faerhaga in N08, quite conveniently near the Barony’s camp.

Also in N08 are THL Otelia d’Alsace’s hand tool demonstrations, in the Barony of Thescorre encampment.

Lastly, in the main Pennsic University area, Sir Bedwyr will be demonstrating how to use a variety of of Eurpoean hand tools.

Check the Schedule for more information.

Wood Shop Day Today

Join us today, July 14th for the last Woodworking Guild Shop Day before Pennsic, in Ishiyama’s shop in Point Breeze, from 10am to 2pm.

If you have any wood projects you need or want for Pennsic, now’s your chance to get advice and help making them. If you have no ideas, bring a 6 or 8 foot board from the hardware store and we’ll help you figure out something useful to make from it.

Send email to “woodworking (at) debatablelands.org” if you have any questions or need the address.
